This reminds me of that story from the US where a man 'acquired' a JATO engine (Jet Assisted Take-Off) used to give an extra boost to engines on air-craft carriers before flight.

He tought it would be a good idea to drive out to a straight road in the desert, strap it to a pick-up, drive as fast as he could and ignite it.

Can't remember the exact forensic details they worked out - but it was something along the lines of -

..he reached a ground speed of over 200 mph, applied brakes cos he started to shit bricks, brakes melted, he took off, reached airplane speeds and impacted into the side of a mountain a few miles away.

There wasn't much left for them to piece together - but they summarised that he probably didn't enjoy it as much as he orginally thought.
