They are a damn sight richer than those who own no property and have no estate at all

I said outside the SE they don't have "most of these options", Niecie - yes they can downsize locally, but moving abroad or to eg the S coast is probably beyond their means.

And, RR, I didn't say they had to sell, or downsize - just that they have more choices if they do.

Surely moving abroad is all relative too - depends where you move to. Don't forget it isn't all in the favour of the South. Higher house prices = higher mortgages and less disposible income during the person's lifetime. Less young people in the South can afford to buy property in their 20's and 30's - you could argue that they need whatever they inherit to get a foot on the property ladder and have a place to live.

I have no problem at all paying tax on capital I may inherit, just paying it on money we won't see for another 15years or so. (and thats not even mentioning that we had to scrape together 3/4 of the IHT as the 2 siblings couldn't afford their share and we are considered affluent - afflent my arse) Not that I wish MIL any ill.

Also having done probate on my mothers estate, we did not have to pay any outgoings until sale of the house - all bills etc were frozen until then and solicitor just gave us the leftovers. Not IHT to pay there, but surely IHT is not due until estate finalised?

IHT is due within 6 months of teh death - we've already paid a 10th and my mum only died in May!

That does seem a tad unfair. Also sorry for your loss.
