This story has really upset me. The awful graphic photos, the fact people were amused by it and turning up to point and laugh and the hideous way in which that poor man must have died. Its truly awful. I can't even begin to think about how his poor family must be feeling.

Chimney hasn't been in use for a long time, it's just a landmark now.

I followed the story all day, i couldn't stop thinking about it and how scared he must have been. I dont think he was alive after around 10am to be honest, and they didn't get him down til after 4pm. Just a harrowing day for all involved.

The chimney has had bit taken off it piece by piece for years and it became unsafe and unstable, it’s only kept there as far as I’m aware as it’s a local landmark, I don’t think it serves any purpose any more.

@Miaowing .... he was upside down for hours in sub zero temperatures

missyB1 · 29/10/2019 10:29

Oh no I hadn’t realised he died! I was saw it on yesterday’s news and I was desperately hoping he would be brought down alive and make a good recovery.
What a shockingly sad thing to happen, poor poor man.

PavlovaFaith · 29/10/2019 10:32

Please correct me if I'm talking nonsense but the body isn't designed to be upside down. Just considering blood flow. The valves are designed to trap and release blood at different stages to bring it around the body. The trauma to the whole body must be staggering for such a long time. I hate being upside down even for a few moments. No wonder the poor man died.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 29/10/2019 10:35

This type of voyeurism isn't new. Public hangings were considered a good social event to take children to in the past. We haven't changed much Sad

greypetex · 29/10/2019 10:36

@overnightangel

I have reported your post.

It is insensitive, unnecessary and downright awful of you to post that.

WolfOfOdin · 29/10/2019 10:41

If you mean me, I posted that in reference to people taking their kids to watch, it was very obvious he was either unconscious or had sadly passed

OP posts:
DuckWillow · 29/10/2019 10:42

Wheat have you considered that he may well have had MH issues?

greypetex · 29/10/2019 10:44

@WolfOfOdin

No, I mean the poster I tagged.

The 'rumours are...' comment Angry

WolfOfOdin · 29/10/2019 10:47

Ah sorry, I thought I had said something out of order and you'd tagged the person below me by accident Blush

OP posts:
DuckWillow · 29/10/2019 10:48

I thought the comment by Wheat was the awful one on here.
The “if he hadn’t climbed it in the first place” comment.

To be honest the comment by Overnightangel helos explain why he might have done what he did. Nothing “downright awful” about that.

Poor poor man.

greypetex · 29/10/2019 10:50

@DuckWillow

That's your opinion.

I think it is awful to post 'rumours' - particularly when the subject is a dead man. Speculation about his family as well? Not ok. Not ok at all.

greypetex · 29/10/2019 10:51

@DuckWillow

The comment by wheat is equally as bad. I'm not putting them against each other. I was just a bit eyed open that anyone could think it's appropriate to post rumours as to why he may have been there Sad

DuckWillow · 29/10/2019 10:53

Okay....

No not okay but the heartless “if he hadn’t climbed it” is in my opinion which is as valid as yours is even worse.

As bad in fact as those berating the man elsewhere on social media.

People are nasty,

Kazzyhoward · 29/10/2019 10:54

it’s only kept there as far as I’m aware as it’s a local landmark,

It's a listed building so can't be removed.

DuckWillow · 29/10/2019 10:56

Sorry To greypetex...my response sounds more snippy than it should do. I didn’t mean it to come across like that, stinking cold and not thinking clearly.

greypetex · 29/10/2019 10:57

@DuckWillow

Like I said, I'm not pitting them against each other. I just responded to the 'rumour' thing when I saw it and responded. The comment t was before wheats so I possibly would have got to that too; anyway I think it's safe to say neither of those things are ok

WolfOfOdin · 29/10/2019 10:57

We may never know why he was up there, and to be honest its irrelevant anyway, nobody deserves to die in such a horrific and public way

OP posts:
TricklBOO · 29/10/2019 11:05

The poor man.

HopeMumsnet · 29/10/2019 11:09

Hi all,
We have removed a couple of posts; let's not speculate over what might have brought this gentleman to his fate, certainly until it's a bit more solid in the press? We understand that it's a horrific case and one that people will wish to comment on but we never know whose families are on the site, so it might be good to post with that in mind.

Drabarni · 29/10/2019 11:18

Poor man, may he RIP.
So sorry for his family and friends. Thanks

swapsicles · 29/10/2019 11:24

This reminds me of a case a few years back where someone got stuck upside down somewhere and died as a result.
Again and same as this case it appeared that people had heard shouts the night before but ignored them, no fault of their own just presumed it was someone drunk, which is I guess what most people would do, I usually ignore shouts outside too unless I hear anything concerning.

thisneverendingsummer · 29/10/2019 11:46

@WolfOfOdin

This has upset me quite a lot. What a tragic thing to happen. Sad I also think the people gawping at him, and laughing at what happened (at the scene) are pure pondscum. Worse actually!

It's basically hi-jinks gone wrong (HORRIBLY wrong!) A really awful tragic turn of events. To the people saying 'what was he doing up there anyway?' Do have some compassion please.

We all do daft things, and sometimes things that endanger us. If a young woman walked home from a nightclub, is it her own fault if she gets murdered? If someone has had a few drinks, and they were larking about near the River Severn, and toppled into it and drowned, is it their fault if they drown? Did they ASK for it? Did they deserve to die? Hmm

No, they bloody well didn't! They were doing something many people do, and they got unlucky.

I know this is not something most people would do, and I can't imagine what possessed this man to climb almost 300 feet to the top of a chimney on a cold late-October night, (with no top on.) But he did do it. Maybe for a laugh, a dare, a challenge, who knows???

But he most certainly didn't deserve this heartbreaking, tragic end. He must have been SO scared and cold, and I can't even imagine what must have been going through his head. I just pray that he went into a sleep/coma quite quickly, so he didn't suffer for long.

Also, as a previous poster said, if the man had survived, he would have been lambasted on social media and the news, for being reckless, and risking the lives of the emergency services people. But as he tragically died, people are turning on the emergency services for 'taking too long,' and some are even blaming them for his death! Sad They did everything they could FGS!

R.I.P. this poor man. And my thoughts go out to his family too. Flowers

@Morgan12

There was a young girl in my town who committed suicide by jumping from a block of flats. A crowd gathered whilst she was up there, filming her and shouting 'jump jump jump'. There are just no words. Poor, poor man! Sad

I wonder if you live in the same town I used to live!!! One time (some 7-8 years back) in the town I used to live - a man was attempting to jump off the top of a multi-story car park (5 or 6 storeys, so like maybe 60 feet I think it was...) Below on the ground, were people shouting JUMP JUMP JUMP! And laughing and jeering. Absolutely vile people. Angry
