I'm not sure if there is another thread on this tragedy.
How awful for the victims and their families.
I hope there is a special place in hell for human traffickers.
The final text from the young girl, Pham Thi Tra My to her mother is utterly heartbreaking. She says "I'm sorry"
What she must have been going through.
Sad

Just reading this, it’s awful.

There was another thread but it got deleted

misspiggy19 · 26/10/2019 17:53

Driver has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter

Yeahnahyeah1 · 26/10/2019 18:05

It’s just heartbreaking. How desperate they must be to do it in the first place and how terrified they must have been in their final moments.
Can’t believe the driver has been charged. How on earth do you get yourself into such a vile situation. It’s just horrific.

Bigeater · 26/10/2019 18:07

The other thread was deleted presumably because of speculation about the driver. Looks as though the speculation may have been on the money though. Heartbreaking seeing the families in Vietnam Sad

Minorityreports · 26/10/2019 19:11

Came on to check for a thread as I see he's been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter. I hope the law comes down heavy on him.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 27/10/2019 00:18

So sad I do find it strange though that the details say they were partially clothed. Why would they have few clothes on going into a freezer.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/10/2019 00:22

It's not unusual for people in the advanced stages of hypothermia to feel paradoxically warm and, in a confused state, remove clothing.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 27/10/2019 00:48

Oh how sad and awful I wonder what was so bad at home that they wanted to come here. It was an awful alot of money they had to pay too

managedmis · 27/10/2019 00:51

I don't see how the driver was charged though? He'd just picked up the van?

57Varieties · 27/10/2019 00:54

I can’t bear it, these poor souls, it just makes me cry to think about it.

The contempt I have for the scum who did this has no bounds.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/10/2019 00:57

Depends on whether you believe he thought he was picking up an empty van and never looked inside it i guess?

MyGoodTimes · 27/10/2019 01:01

Those poor families and the victims. 😭 I hope those involved get nailed and never get out. It's reported there were three trucks in convoy. Two trucks reached their destination and the truck with the dead victims was inexplicably delayed somewhere. It is horrendous.

BlouseAndSkirt · 27/10/2019 01:17

I wonder how he has been charged with manslaughter when they were presumably dead before he picked up the trailer.

It hasn’t been said what he was doing between Sunday and Wednesday.

MyGoodTimes · 27/10/2019 01:34

The driver is legally responsible for the consignment he is hauling. The victims were found on his watch in his container. There's 5 arrested in connection with this to date. It's being reported as part of a massive trafficking ring operation.

BlackCatSleeping · 27/10/2019 01:38

I’ve been following this case. It’s so awful what people go through.

user764329056 · 27/10/2019 01:34

Heartbreaking

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 27/10/2019 16:33

Yes. A van full of dead people that he was responsible for the deaths of, along with other people of course, it wasn't just him.

Have you SEEN that 25 year old drivers house?

An un-named 48 year old male and an un-named 23 year old male have also been arrested. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if these turned out to be the drivers father and brother.

57Varieties · 27/10/2019 20:38

He might not have actively or purposely killed them. But if someone is complicit in the trafficking of human beings and they die in the course of the trafficking process then they’ve clearly played a part in that.

It must have been fucking horrific to have opened that trailer and saw the bodies inside but if he was part of the trafficking process then I have no sympathy

BlouseAndSkirt · 27/10/2019 20:57

He must have known he was the last part of a chain.

It seems that it isn’t at all normal for a driver to open a refrigerated trailer they are hauling, they usually have seals on them.

The only reason a driver opens the back is if it is an empty trailer at an overnight stop and they want to
Let people know there is nothing to steal. So it could have been that he had driven there thinking he was taking the empty trailer back to Ireland and stopped for a sleep. Except witnesses said his cab had been there all day with the curtains closed, as if sleeping then.

He stopped to let everyone out, and would then have driven the trailer home.

57Varieties · 27/10/2019 21:04

It would seem odd to pull up overnight half an hour after picking up the trailer

beanaseireann · 28/10/2019 08:15

I don't think we should speculate as there are court proceedings ongoing and this thread could be pulled.
I started the thread as a way to give my deepest sympathy to the victims' families and to show my abhorrence of people traffickers as I know there would be very many Mumsnetters who would share my views.

True.

It is just heartbreaking for the families, who alongside their grief for their loved ones will be left with nothing. Worse than nothing: huge debt.

I was reading about the lives of families in that region of Vietnam. A huge chemical leak from a Chinese owned factory 2 years ago wiped out the fishing industry that they relied on.

Too many people think it is greed that drives migrants. It isn’t, it’s too often desperation.

We in the UK fret about sending our 18 yos to Uni, not sending them into the unknown into the hands of people smugglers to work in nail bars or worse.

I have developed a deep hatred for people who support the whole chain, including men who use women in prostitution and people who smoke food grown in the illegal hydroponics farms where so many of these people end up.
