Saudi Arabia: beheading teenagers for taking part in demonstrations

I can hardly bear to look at the mild, kind humorous, young face of Mujtaba Al Sweikat, he looks so like my nephew.Arrested as a teenager, on his way to study in Michigan, for the crime of attending demonstrations organised on WhatsApp, and beheaded yesterday.

Another, beheaded for similar 'crimes' he committed when he was 16.

Teenagers, tortured for months and then beheaded. In a one -day 'spree' of 37 executions, making a total of over 100 this year.

Every drop of their oil is blood on our hands. This, more than anything, makes me a raging environmentalist.

Why does our government suck up to this barbaric regime? How can Brits go there and work for them? Giving them the expertise that makes them wealthy?

But he wasn't arrested for attending demonstrations

Sweikat was charged with armed disobedience against the king, as well as attacking, shooting and injuring security forces, civilians and passersby. He was also accused of destroying public property, causing chaos and disrupting the peace, by participating in a terrorist cell, to make and deliver Molotov cocktails.

Confessions illicited under torture...

Extract from an email I received yesterday from the campaigning group Reprieve:

Mujtaba al-Sweikat (pictured) was arrested at King Fahd International Airport, on his way to begin his studies at Western Michigan University. He was severely beaten all over his body, including the soles of his feet, and convicted on the basis of a confession extracted through torture.

Abdulkarim al-Hawaj was charged with participating in demonstrations, incitement via social media and preparing banners with anti-state slogans. He was beaten, tortured with electricity and chained with his hands above his head until he ‘confessed’ to terrorism offences.

Salman Qureish was arrested shortly after his 18th birthday, accused of crimes that took place when he was a juvenile. He was denied basic legal rights and sentenced to death in a mass trial, despite repeated interventions on his behalf by the United Nations.

"The majority of those executed were Shi’a men who were convicted after sham trials that violated international fair trial standards which relied on confessions extracted through torture."

This of absolutely no help for the victims, but, as humanity; Saudi Arabia began as nationally powerless, but nationally powerful- camel traders. Within 1-2 generations, most will return to that.

Some are born to rise up, and take their people with them. Some.. aren't.
