I am going to get slaughtered for this I know but I think the lack of news/response over the kidnapping of a 3 year old girl shows that ...

one child's plight is more important than another in the eyes of some.

She is also three, she is also Brittish, Yes she is currently still alive but there is a threat over her life, but it doesn't seem as relevant somehow.

is it because she's in a country most wouldn't travel to?

because she was taken by rebels and not paedophiles?

DoubleBluff · 06/07/2007 09:44

But it is in the news isn't it?

NoodleStroodle · 06/07/2007 09:45

Yeah and she's in Africa isn't she.....

Like Dafour - it's Africa

tiredemma · 06/07/2007 09:46

Possibly.

Possibly.

Both to me are equally awful.

WideWebWitch · 06/07/2007 09:46

quite.

MamaMaiasaura · 06/07/2007 09:46

Not going to slaughter you for that point. Tried to make that point on the other thread the other day but Haychee ignored it.

She also isnt blonde/fair skinning asaik.

Very as dad wants to swap places and the captors have made serious threats to kill her also rebels do rape women/girls.

lilymolly · 06/07/2007 09:46

I am inclinded to agree with you

LadyTophamHatt · 06/07/2007 09:47

i agree 100% wannabe.

last night as i was aboutto log off the thread had 6 posts, now it has 20 or so.

the thread about madeline reach 2-300 in the blink of an eye.

tiredemma · 06/07/2007 09:47

Doublebluff- when Madeliene went missing every single news station in the UK set up camp in Praia de Luz. Who has upped camp to Nigeria?

Nowhere near the same amount of coverage.

As Noodle says- Its Africa......

nailpolish · 06/07/2007 09:47

its because

THEY KNOW WHERE SHE IS AND WHO SHE IS WITH

I totally agree with you wannabe. I've hardly heard anything about it.

Enid · 06/07/2007 09:48

yes agree wannabe

it was the fifth item in the news last night

shocking, disgusting

remember this folks next time you are being manipulated by the media to wear ribbons in your hair...

edam · 06/07/2007 09:49

It's interesting that the Madeleine obsessives haven't been talking about this. But in terms of news values, it's different. Kidnappings are common in that area and she's resident there, IYSWIM. Not saying that anyone should be less concerned, but can see why it doesn't dominate the news agenda in the same way.

bewilderbeast · 06/07/2007 09:49

I've been thinking exactly the same thing wannaBe, I said as much to DP last night, and it sickens me

MamaMaiasaura · 06/07/2007 09:49

Actually - this the third child to be kidnapped by the 'rebels' so surely if they had upped the response sooner this could have been avoided??

They also dont know WHERE she is.

edam · 06/07/2007 09:49

Difference is Madeleine is a 'it could be me' story.

DoubleBluff · 06/07/2007 09:50

MAybe too dangerous for press to set up camp in Nigeria.
Sh eis not missing as such, they know who has her and where sh eis, it is just a question of time (hopefully) before she is home.
Not trying to diminish the situ, poor child and her family must be terrified.

edam · 06/07/2007 09:50

Whose 'they', Awen?

expatinscotland · 06/07/2007 09:50

It's because it's in Africa, not a nice sunny resort.

Sorry, but I honestly think that's the sad truth and it does make me rather angry.

Carmenere · 06/07/2007 09:50

The difference being, apart from the obvious ones like that she is in Africa, is that it is hopeful that she will be recovered alive. That they more or less know who have taken her adn that kidnapping is common there and that the victims are rarely killed. Terrifying as this may be for all involved, the prognosis is hopeful and the danger is a tangible one. It is entirely different from the MMC case where the prognosis is bad and and the danger is still unknown.

Twiglett · 06/07/2007 09:50

I agree with you in part

I also think that the fact there is a 'face' for the kidnappers (evil men out for money) and a point to the kidnap and the fact it has happened before has a bearing on it

Also she is within the country there is no need for international coverage

Electroma · 06/07/2007 09:51

Nailpolish -

if this was my kid I wouldn't give a f*ck that they know roughly where and with whom she is.

There is a danger to her life, and she is not with her mummy and daddy - end of story.

wannabe - I agree.

Also it's less easy for the chattering classes to relate to

...Mark Warner holiday vs over-populated, under invested, crime ridden developing country.....in Africa

Also if they knew where she was surely they'd get her back???

DoubleBluff · 06/07/2007 09:52

Kidnapping is commonplace in that part of the world.
If she was not british it would NEVER make the news anyway.
3 yr olds going missing in Portugal is unheard of.
