Possible sighting of Madeleine McCann in Malta

It has been reported that several British tourists have reported sightings of a girl resembling Madeleine in the Maltese resorts of Sliema and Valletta (which are fairly close to one another). A BBC report can be found here.

Why was a man whose first language was not English speaking to the child in the English language? If the man and the child were related, why did he call her 'little girl', rather than using her name? This sighting makes me extremely hopeful. Perhaps the police in Malta will be capable than those in Portugal.

Tissy - I was laughing at that, too.

Very reliable reporting.

not getting at you, mumemma, some Americans have a rather insular outlook on the world (if it is not in the USA of A, it doesn't exist!). Clearly not Mumsnetting Americans, or they wouldn't be here!

mumemma · 22/06/2007 17:03

No, it's ok - I nearly commented on it being US press and possibly shaky grasp of geography but thought it might offend someone. It's also in the Times. Reliable? Who knows?:

of course, not having looked too closely at the site, I may be completely unreasonable in assuming it's American at all....

tissy · 22/06/2007 17:04

Abject apologies to any Americans I may have inadvertently offended

'Local police and Interpol searched the Caribbean island, its ports and airports' I hate to be picky, but Malta isn't in the Caribbean is it?

paulaplumpbottom · 22/06/2007 17:19

How long ago was this? Why didn't that guy call from a pay phone tight then

noddyholder · 22/06/2007 17:20

It would be news if there was any.

mumemma · 22/06/2007 17:25

Victoria Beckham changes her hairstyle and it makes the front pages, personally I don't call that news.

Well, this is in the news and the police took it seriously as there were multiple sightings so it's fair enough to mention it.

I didn't know that there was a threshold above which we are 'allowed' to discuss something.

noddyholder · 22/06/2007 17:27

chill out

TaylorsMummy · 22/06/2007 18:01

chill out? i don't think that's a very appropriate response in the circumstances. some people are very upset about Madeleine.and why is it not news? it was on the news so it's news imo

noddyholder · 22/06/2007 18:10

I think it is an appropriate response to someone sounding off who is not a relative or close friend of the family.I think it is more inappropriate to keep on about how upset your average jo is about someone they really don't know at all.I think we have been here before though so I'm off

littlemissbossy · 22/06/2007 18:13

According to the law of mumsnet you can only be discuss certain topical things, the interesting topic of crocs being one of them.
It's in the news, it is news as far as I'm concerned and quite frankly if I want to talk about Madeleine McCann all day long I bloody well will!

littlemissbossy · 22/06/2007 18:14

Meant to add, I sincerely hope the sightings result in something positive for the McCann family.

Hmm
mumemma · 22/06/2007 18:47

I didn't know that you had to know someone to be upset about their situation.

Wolfgirl · 22/06/2007 18:55

Cut n pasted from another site:

good news just heard on radio 4 that there have been 13 sightings since may 27th in malta. perhaps there will be even better news very soon

xx

littlemissbossy · 22/06/2007 18:59

that's good news Wolfgirl, thanks for that

tiredemma · 22/06/2007 19:01

I really find it difficult to believe that 13 seperate people have seen madeliene and not one has approached to actually clarify if it is her or not.

I just find it hard to believe...

compo · 22/06/2007 19:03

agree tiredemmma

littlemissbossy · 22/06/2007 19:07

but it's often after the event that people realise what they've seen
