For ‘re-education’ against their will.
Which China denies but the story yesterday on BBC showed the infrastructure and I now see there are news reports on this going back to August which I didn’t know about.

What are our political representatives going to do? What can we do?

It's appalling isn't it?

Sadly our political representatives are so lily livered that they'll do nothing. Oh, I suppose they might make weak remonstrances. Look at their reaction to the murder of Khashoggi.

The only gleam of hope that they might be more forthright with China is that we don't buy lots of oil from them nor sell as many arms to them as we do to the Saudis.

Unprincipled? You bet.

I feel sad and scared and angry and helpless all at the same time by this.

Yes. I'm sure I do remember a time when our politician overlords weren't too cowardly to say no to certain regimes, but dh says it was never so.

TeacupDrama · 24/10/2018 18:42

they have been doing the same to chinese churches for years too, shutting them down demolishing their buildings saying you have to be an atheist to be in the party they discriminate against anyone of any religion and the re-education thing has been going on for years
They seem to be really scared of anyone having an belief system which they think may usurp Jinping in even their thought life

Its the era of 'strong men'. China's current premier seems determined to show 'no weakness' on any front. Not backing down to Trump's trade war, rounding up dissidents, censorship and cracking down on 'corruption' in the party. It seems plenty of these guys are happy to take advantage of the turmoil and weakness of liberal democracies and basically do what they want.

florenceheadache · 24/10/2018 18:54

Why horrified? I don’t find it surprising at all.

cdtaylornats · 24/10/2018 21:46

I've never seen the logic in punishing foreign governments by putting 1000s of our own people out of work.

Jux · 25/10/2018 15:20

Ah. What price principles, eh? Says it all.

cdtaylornats · 25/10/2018 20:59

Jux if it was your job on the line I'm sure you would demand the government sticks to its principles.

QwertySmalls · 13/10/2019 10:19

I'm bumping this after seeing the Vice documentary and to raise awareness that this is still going on. I'm surprised there isn't more outrage.
Forced abortion, forced sterilization and children being taken away. Forced to eat pork, so much more stuff

Sadly if the word China is followed by something awful I’m not shocked, disgusted and upset, but sadly not shocked.

Sadly money is more valuable than a human life.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/11/2019 17:53

TBH nothing China does would surprise me. They have zero regard for human rights and from all I hear, very little for the environment.
