Agree that Ahmadinejad is equally scary. And let us not foreget that Putin and Ahmadinejad like to work together.

Good point, Eleusis.

edam · 04/06/2007 14:19

Well, I'm inclined not to trust any leader who orders the assasination of a British resident in Britain, merrily exposing hundreds of passers by to potentially life-threatening radiation.

As for GB wanting to defend Europe, yeah, right. Going on past form, it'll just be a way of extending the US frontier so any bombs fall on us first, leaving the US itself untouched.

tissy · 04/06/2007 14:20

This is Sky news we are reading, right? Not an in-depth article from the Times, or some other august institution. I did read the article, actually, but there wasn't much there.

Since when was Europe part of the US (or vice versa?).

I'm very uncomfortable with American missiles on European soil. If we need defending, let's do it ourselves.

SueBaroo · 04/06/2007 14:23

But I thought one of the reasons for not renewing Trident was that we could rely on the US to protect us? is lost

Crikey, I'd rather have the US as an ally than not.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/06/2007 14:26

Of course this to is George's fault. suprise suprise.

Eleusis · 04/06/2007 14:31

Here is one little part to get you started.

"If a new missile defence system will be deployed in Europe, then we need to warn you today that we will come with a response," Mr Putin told The Times.

Note the phrade "missile defence system".

Sorry babe, the US

justaphase · 04/06/2007 14:42

I don't know the difference between missile defence systems and missile attack systems and how quickly one can turn into the other.

And if we get to find out about it at all.

I don't really know any more than the article. It would be interesting to know how this missile defence system works, it reliability, etc.

I suppose it Putin wanted a nuclear war he could just peg some of France's reactors.

Maybe he wants to scare us away from Nuclear power so we remain very dependant on his pipelines. In fact that probably IS what he is playing at.

OP posts:
Eleusis · 04/06/2007 14:46

PS Hi Kerrymum. How are you?

OP posts:
paulaplumpbottom · 04/06/2007 14:47

I also wonder if Russia could even afford an arms race

justaphase · 04/06/2007 14:47

He is adored because he turned Russia from a humiliated beggar back into a world power which the west depends on for resources. He gave the Russian nation its national pride back. Can't blame them for liking him.

Does not make him any less scary though, just the oposite.

Oh, they can afford an arms race, no doubt about that.

The Russian stabilisation fund was $200bn last time I checked and rising.

They have not quite decided what to do with it yet. It is sitting there.

Because he is not accountable?

Because he is smart and scary as opposed to Mr Bush who is only the latter.
