So sad. We used to go on it and look round when we were little and loved it. Not been for ages .

MrsJohnCusack · 21/05/2007 07:05

i've jsut been reading about this on the BBC - am in NZ but grew up around Greenwich and feeling very sad - it's a major part of my childhood

eidsvold · 21/05/2007 07:05

have friends who live near there - wonder if they have been evacuated??

doesn't look good does it??

fryalot · 21/05/2007 07:09

it's very sad - just been looking at BBC pictures, and it doesn't look like it's salvagable

MrsJohnCusack · 21/05/2007 07:33

they are treating it as suspicious

KTeePee · 21/05/2007 07:35

Just saw this on the news too . My friend was just saying recently that she wanted to bring her boys down to Greenwich soon see the Cutty Sark while it was still in reasonable nick....

There seems to be a lot of arson happening at the moment - a school near us has been hit 3 times in the past year (and this is not a rough area) and my old primary school was set on fire this past weekend....

Fillyjonk · 21/05/2007 07:36

oh what a bloody SHAME

i was looking forward to taking ds there over half term

pinballwizard · 21/05/2007 07:36

it was being refurbished so i strongly suspect that it will be related to the refurbsihment work ...how awful it looks, it is sad isn't it..irreplaceable piec e of history

JARM · 21/05/2007 07:41

police are treating it as highly suspicious and are looking for a silver car apparently?!

Gutting though.

Oh dear :sad.

My grandparents lived in Greenwich so I used to go a lot as a child and was looking forward to recreating that with DS when he was old enough.

tigermoth · 21/05/2007 07:47

oh NO!

I guess I'll hear more about it at work in a couple of hours

Nbg · 21/05/2007 07:50
Sad
tigermoth · 21/05/2007 07:56

Hope this won't affect the route of the Tour de France cycling race in July - it starts near Cutty Sark gardens.

sockmonkey · 21/05/2007 08:00

That's really sad. I have never been in, but have walked past it on visits to London. It's a huge shame. I hope they can salvage it, but I guess it doesn't look good.

Hulababy · 21/05/2007 08:01

very sad isn't it? Apparantly 50% of it had been removed for refurbishment for it's reopening in 2009. Wonder if they can save any of it now.

cathcart · 21/05/2007 08:04

really sad to hear this, its such a big piece of history.

CODalmighty · 21/05/2007 08:07

i really dont care.
terribel innit

WendyWeber · 21/05/2007 08:47

cod, weren't you a history teacher???

CODalmighty · 21/05/2007 08:48

yes btut hats not my perioid[wink[

nogoes · 21/05/2007 08:57

I wanted to take ds in the summer. Bad news for Greenwich tourism.

twelveyeargap · 21/05/2007 09:03

Person from the Cutty Sark charity said that much of it was in storage becuase of the refurbishment work and that they do think they can save it. Just looks pretty awful at the moment. The masts, rigging, fat ladies that go on the bow (what are they called anyway?); they're all in storage along with 50% of the timbers.

suedonim · 21/05/2007 09:09

It's a long time since I went on the Cutty Sark and it now looks like it'll be a long time before I go again.
