Abolishing the Royal Family. Discuss

OP posts:
NameChanger22 · 22/05/2018 19:03

Every opportunity I get to complain about the royals I do, even in a room full of royal family sycophants. I'm always complaining about them online. I've converted a few people to my way of thinking Grin. I haven't started a petition, but I would definitely sign one.

NameChanger22 · 22/05/2018 19:03

What are you doing dapple?

RunMummyRun68 · 22/05/2018 19:25

Time they went? Lol, where do you suggest they 'go.'?

Dapplegrey · 22/05/2018 19:39

NameChanger - I would rather have a Royal Family than President Cherie Blair or President John Prescott so I'm not doing anything to have the monarchy abolished.

NameChanger22 · 22/05/2018 20:03

Dapple - you do realise that when we get rid of the monarchy we don't get Cherie Blair or John Prescott as replacements don't you?

RunMummy - I don't care where they go, that's up to them, as long as they don't move next door to me. There are plenty of people that wouldn't mind them nearby.

RunMummyRun68 · 22/05/2018 20:14

The monarchy is going nowhere

And if they did, then they would be as wealthy as they are now anyway. Just have more freedom and choice, putting them in a better position than now

NameChanger22 · 22/05/2018 20:20

The monarchy is going nowhere

No thanks to you.

Dapplegrey · 22/05/2018 20:26

Namechanger - I realise we may not get Cherie or John. Who would you like?

NameChanger22 · 22/05/2018 20:38

We don't need a royal family, so it's not a question of who. We cannot have a fair system and a royal family, the two are not compatible.

I would like a fairer system, that's all, it can never be completely fair, but I think what we have is appalling. Some people do nothing and have everything, that can't be right

I would like every member of society able to pay their bills, eat and live their lives with a little bit of happiness. Why do other people not want that?

lemonsunshinecake · 22/05/2018 20:44

Completely agree OP

RunMummyRun68 · 22/05/2018 20:52

Ok let's get rid of them

How much extra per person will we each get each week then? What does it work out as?

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/05/2018 12:12

You would be better off getting rid of all of the self serving, loophole jumping lifetime politicians first.

AntiqueSinger · 30/05/2018 14:35

Some people do nothing and have everything, that can't be right

I agree 1 trillion percent! It drives me nuts that there are people in government who, frankly, I wouldn't trust to look after a cat, but get paid hugely more than say, hard working teachers, or cleaners all because they went to Eaton - but it's life.

The only way to make it fairer is to ban the right for people to inherit wealth. Literally a ban on inheriting significant assets above say £10,000.

Another way is to get rid of all private and grammar schools.

Since some people find the idea of nationalising the railways drastic I don't think either of those measures are likely to happen anytime soon.

Other than something extremely drastic like that, getting rid of the Royal Family will accomplish nothing.

Another thing you fail to consider and to which I have had my eyes opened recently, is the role of nepotistic influence. I have a friend with huge family who has literally walked into every job and received an offer at every university through contacts. One job she has applied for recently she didn't even do the test for, it was done for her, because she has two cousins working there. Had I applied at the same time as her, I wouldn't have had a lookin. She got confirmation of the job today.

So how do you deal with things like that? How do you deal with say, some people getting great work experience opportunities because of who they/mum/dad/great grandfather/15th cousin twice removed is and some not?

If you want a fairer society you need a revolution. A big one. And no one wants that. It's been done already, and when it all dies down it's business as usual, the same thing in a different guise.

ALittleAubergine · 30/05/2018 14:42

I think redistributing profits from large companies should help more. Nothing too drastic, just slightly smaller salaries, bonuses, pensions etc for ceos, slightly better salaries for staff etc. More focus on staff rather than shareholders.

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/05/2018 22:21

We could start by making sure that the companies pay all of the tax that they owe. And the same should be done for all high earning people.
