Police have arrested the Original Night Stalker/East Area Rapist

Possibly the biggest unsolved serial killer of recent times. Ex police officer. He’s in his 70s now. I remember reading a book about all the killings and am amazed they’ve caught (hopefully the right guy) after all this time. DNA apparantly a match.

Fox News are doing a press conference which can be live streamed online now.

He’s admitted it.

I am so unbelievably excited by this. I know they thought that catching him was a possibility but it’s been unsolved for so long!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 25/04/2018 20:46

Wow.

ronswansonstache · 25/04/2018 20:47

Huge news! The wonders of DNA...

MNscum · 25/04/2018 20:50

It’s huge news. 12 murders and 51 rapes.

Just wish they could catch the zodiac killer now but I think he’s probably dead.

I don’t think the case is very well known in the U.K. when I read the book a couple of years ago it was the first I’d ever heard of it.

I listened to the casefile podcast episodes on it last summer when I was home on my own and it was the first I'd heard of it. The cases just kept coming! Thank god he's talking so they should get answers.

I also want to know if he has an unusually tiny penis, which was mentioned a LOT in the podcast!

And they charged someone with the kidnap and murder of those girls Laura Bible and Ashley Freeman this week. www.cbsnews.com/news/da-details-horrific-last-days-of-girls-abducted-in-1999-as-suspect-is-charged/

Wildling · 26/04/2018 02:46

I was just reading a thread over on reddit about it. Incredible that they caught him after all this time.

Koalablue · 26/04/2018 02:54

This is so amazing and unexpected. I listened to the podcast mentioned above and remember them saing there was a military or police element to it. I think I'll go and relisten.

TheCatsWhiskers · 26/04/2018 10:18

I am so pleased for the victims and their families, I can't imagine how it must feel to have waited for this day for so long.

Although I understand due to the statute of limitations he cannot be charged for the rapes now.

I really never thought they would catch him.

MorrisZapp · 26/04/2018 10:23

Absolutely incredible. So, so many questions about the whole thing.

I didn't watch the press conference but twitter was mighty unimpressed. Cops patting themselves and each other on the backs.

Given the DNA match, could it simply be that a relative of Deangelo was arrested, leading to a familial match? If that was the case then I'm not sure that dogged persistence really won the day.

If the match was made as a result of a tip off from the public, then I think that podcasters and authors have kept these cases higher in the public conscious more than the police ever did.

It'll all come out in time.

ILikTheBred · 26/04/2018 10:35

Wow that Wikipedia article ! What a sicko. Can’t believe they’ve caught him after all this time. Could someone tell me where to find the podcasts ?

MorrisZapp · 26/04/2018 10:44

Casefile did a definitive series of podcasts, you can listen on any podcast app such as stitcher or tune in radio. It's free.

The series they did on the Moors murders was absolutely superlative.

NeverHadANickname · 26/04/2018 10:59

So glad there is a thread on this, I was going to make one if not.

Sounds like an overreaction but when I heard yesterday I went really lightheaded. Incredible news. Still really early days but I have been following the news and watched the press release last night. Will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

MNscum · 26/04/2018 15:42

Currently listening to the casefile podcasts and now with the benefit of hindsight so much stuff fits. Suspect had a gun described as like a police issue gun, had a baton described as like a police baton.

Twitter rumour is that it was his daughter who had suspicions and contracted the police. I wonder if she had been reading the new book which was published a couple of months ago.

Apparantly he can’t be charged with any of the 51 rapes because of the statute of limitations. Not sure how true that is but that’s what the true crime nuts on social media are saying. Seriously hope they find a way round that.

BREAKING NEWS

(I've always wanted to do that)

The DNA of Joe Deangelo was tracked down working from a familial match found on a genealogy website.

I'm a professional genealogist. My day couldn't get any better! This is huge, and has worldwide implications for how criminals are caught.

I hope murderers and rapists are looking over their shoulders now - the clock is ticking on them and they will be brought to justice.

MNscum · 27/04/2018 16:41

Wow. I did see that been posted as a possible theory on reddit. Amazing.

OP posts:
MNscum · 27/04/2018 16:43

I'm surprised that there isn't a daft data protection law not allowing such use though. Do you know if UK sites would also allow such voluntary samples to be matched against unsolved crimes.

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 27/04/2018 17:57

It was just on Radio 1. When you give your DNA to these sites you have the option to be public or not. Many people will want to be public so they can be matched with eg birth families.

It wasn't a well known site like Ancestry.com, it was a public sharing site. Will be fascinating to hear more.

Lady on Radio 4 said the suspect hasn't confessed and a source said he's 'not the type to give it up'. Very interesting times ahead.

MorrisZapp · 27/04/2018 17:59

Sorry for typo. Report was on Radio 4.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 27/04/2018 20:30

Thank the lord for that.

MNscum · 27/04/2018 22:15

Yes, originally I’d read he was talking but now they’re saying he isn’t. So if he doesn’t confess guess there’ll be a trial.
