DC there are many causes of high house prices, the popular 'lack of supply' one has been much hyped by large building companies who wish planning laws be relaxed so that they can build what they want where they want. I agree local councils are weak hence the hugh number of 2 bed 2 bath luxary designer flats which are crap to live in springing up all over the place. At the moment the fact that people generally (round here anyway) can't afford to trade up as has been the usual way over the years has a lot more to do with our current state of affairs, along with buy to let, right to buy, assured shorthold tennancies, key worker schemes, interest rates held down by the MPC, cheap money for the banks from elsewhere, proliferation of atypical/discount mortgages and the fiddling with the RPI/inflation rate etc etc
PFI has expanded at an astronomical pace as has privatisation by stealth of the NHS under TBs labour goverment. Doesn't really matter whose idea it is it matters more who does what with it.
Of courser the mega rich can live anywhere (I think Monaco must be full of British shopkeepers!) I was replying to a convo between Wychbold and ww earlier down. I also don't seriously believe that the presence of the super rich is keeping me out of my 2 bed terrace.
