I thought this article was interesting in the independent today

And has anyone had an orgasm in birth?

There are MNetter who have. I'm not one of them

This all got quite heated last time it was discussed

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 11:57

er no!! I was in too much pain...

isaidno · 20/03/2007 12:07

oh dear martianbishop; have I accidentally reopened a can of worms?

Actually I had a home birth with DS2 and it was a more relaxed experience - but not that relaxing!

i find that a bit disturbing!

cluckcluckcluck · 20/03/2007 12:13

ha! Yes I did and as you can see I changed my name to post about it last time and I am not any less chicken this time .
The last thread on this subject did get rather heated. Some people are very disturbed by the notion. Nevertheless it does happen. I am not the only woman I know about.
I will say again that I didn't get off on the pain as was suggested last time, but I was very focussed in on myself and I think it was more to do with an internal build up of pressure. And I am not saying, for the record, that birth wasn't painful.
I suspect the G&A helped too .

here's the other thread

I didn;t have an orgasmic birth, and i was skeptical of the notion, it was talked about briefly on the doula course i went on...

BUT , the more i read about birth, the more i learn about it, the more i learn about the pyschosexual aspect of birth, the more i understand it is possible

in an unmedicated birth, with the release of the various hormones, and the mindset and the way a woman can go into herself when labouring... it can happen

birth can be sexual.....nipple stimulation, kissing and being close to your DP/DH releases oxytocin, which encourages contractions,

Ina May Gaskin talks about using the sexy energy that got the baby in, to get it out again. her books are full of birth stories, where the labouring mother is kissed, caressed, stroked , loved, not always sexually, and how much it helps

another book i read, i think, sensitive midwifery, talks a little about masturbation as a way to relieve pain...

doesn;t sit comfortably with everyone, but it is interesting

i really enjoyed giving birth, the feeling of satisfaction of working with my body and pushing my baby out was immense, but not in a sexual way....

MadameWeb · 20/03/2007 12:36

wel i absolutly loved giving birth, more so the 2nd time round (perfect homebirt in water - 5 hour labour)

i was soooo high for days - still am 9 months later when i think about it,

i feltstrong, i felt empowered, excited, happy, but not anything anywhere near sexual!

i just dont get it??

isaidno · 20/03/2007 13:35

Thanks Cluck for finding that old thread! I can see lots of mners were not of an open mind on this one!

The article I linked to mentions that childbirth was desexualised in the 17th century so that male doctors could attend.

So that's where it all went wrong then!

lulumama

"masturbatiun to releave pain"

My baby bumps were so big I could hardly get me knickers on...let alone reach down to the old fanjo for a bit of a fiddle about to help with pain relief !!!!

I loved giving birth, found it an exhilirating experience (obviously linked to the hormone release) but sexual - not on your nelly !!!
