Condensed version - sky want lots of money from Virgin to show their channels... virgin say no.

If no deal is reached by March 1st, Sky 1,2,3, News and Sports news go poof from Virgin customers.

The virgin letter is here

are you talking about that new deal virgin has got out? it looks really good dont it? cheap!

MyNamesNotDaveItsRodney · 26/02/2007 15:17

We were with NTL - we have the same package plus 10mb broadband (on 2 before) for £6 LESS than before, plus various phone deals.

Sky aren't impressed that they are getting customers with said deals and are wanting them to switch to sky, so have bumped up virgin's costs to the rights to air sky channels... virgin have said no.

Not all that bothered myself... I download Lost and don't really watch much else on Sky now buffy n angel are finished!

ah a buffy and angel fan! my mum loves them got all the bleeding box sets! its always on when we go down drives me nuts! lol

coppertop · 27/02/2007 16:08

There have been a couple of threads about this but they only had a few posts. Tbh most of the programmes on Sky One now are repeats that weren't that great the first time around. I liked Malcolm in the Middle but it seems to be on almost permanently now, and The Simpsons is just as bad. I'll miss watching Stargate and Lost but would rather just watch them on DVD than switch from Virgin to Sky.

AllieBongo · 27/02/2007 16:10

no skin off my nose, do you think ntl will reduce their cost as we have less channels??

2shoes · 27/02/2007 17:56

we tried sky before ntl and we could have it as there is a big tree in the way
we decided the tree was more important and went with ntl

bogie · 27/02/2007 18:06

DP works for virgin media and he told me that if they say yes to sky charging more money everyones bill will got up by £5. But virgin own all the uktv channels living trouble bravo and loads more so if sky take away the channels virgin will probably do the same to sky

Tortington · 27/02/2007 18:12

i dont mind. a person can download their faves is a person should want to

Tortington · 27/02/2007 18:12

will our bills go down further then?

Lucycat · 27/02/2007 18:16

I mentioned it yesterday on the Broadband thread!

I will be gutted if we lose Sky One - I love 'Bones' and dh likes 'Lost' and we will miss both.

I hate the way Sky steamroller over everyone and I don't want a bloody dish on the front of my house.

at least I'll still get ANTM

IntergalacticWalrus · 27/02/2007 18:18

We can't get Virgin here

We can't get sky either because of the andlord

Lucycat · 27/02/2007 18:24

custy - where do you get your downloads from?

Tortington · 27/02/2007 18:39

i dont download it's illegal.

Lucycat · 27/02/2007 20:59

ahh ok...thought so

then I shan't either.

gothicmama · 27/02/2007 21:02

Vigin customers how did you get a reduction or is just NTL customers

Flower3554 · 27/02/2007 21:10

I rang Virgin Media, ntl as was, and I was told that Sky sports 1 2 and 3 won't be affected, only Sky sports news, Sky 1 and 2.

According to the chap I spoke to Sky are just blowing hot air and will probably cave in sooner rather than later as they couldn't afford to lose the channels that Virgin have the rights to.

I'm not holding my breath but it doesn't sound as cut and dried as Sky are making out.

Fingers crossed it all gets sorted, I can't imagine no Stargate or Lost

coppertop · 28/02/2007 17:09

I found this report which says that Virgin have won the right to show Lost (1-3). The bad news is that you will have to wait until August for series 3.

From the same source is a report that talks have now failed but that Richard Branson is planning to buy the programmes that Sky One has and show them on Virgin's channels. Here

SoupDragon · 28/02/2007 17:13

It's the non-premium channels. If you're paying a premium (which you do for Sky Sports IIRC) then you won't lose them.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 28/02/2007 17:13

I meantioned this on here last week somewhere...

There had been adverts on sky1 saying that Virgin wanted to get rid of sky blah blah blah and ring this number to stop it blah blah.

I wouldnt miss them tbh, but DP likes sky1 (stargate, the trekkers, buffy, angel, braniac, lost (admittedly i like that too but it WAS a C4 programme, lol), simpsons, futurama, etc

coppertop · 28/02/2007 17:14

AFAIK Sky Sports comes under special regulations which mean that Sky has to make it available. Unfortunately Sky One isn't included in the same category so Sky have the right to stop Virgin from showing it unless they pay more money.

Rodeo · 28/02/2007 17:49

Sky are such gits! I love Lost and 24, I'll be gutted come Sunday if they've gone! I'd pay extra on my bill just so Richard could take the rights off to them off Sky. Maybe I'll set up my own fundraising charity for them, like a Virgin PTA or something...

astonmartin · 01/03/2007 19:21

has anyone worked out what cost they are talking about??

Sky have said that they want to charge 3p per VM customer / day thats about 90p per month for each customer

I dont think thats bad! as VW are making out,

In My opinion this has got more to do with mr Branson still being sore about ITV

its been reported today from VM themselves that they lost 37000 customer last quarter of 2006

princesscc · 01/03/2007 19:48

I would have started a thread on this, but I've spent all afternoon on Sky, Virgin and BT website!! We are on Virgin and dh has declared that he can't live without Sky One! I couldn't give a stuff frankly - the 5 terrestial channels would do me. Anyway, Virgin and Sky are basically putting the phone down on people today and BT are rubbing their hands together, coz everyone will have to go back to BT to get the Sky deals. Now i've got to co-ordinate Sky and BT coming for the same day, coz dh works from home and cannot be without internet. P*ssed off? I should say so
