Russian Ambassador Shot

The Russian Ambassador to Turkey has been shot whilst visiting an art exhibition. Not sure how bad it is but doesn't sound good.

One report suggests the attacker referred to Aleppo but that's not been verified yet.

Sky is saying the gunman was a policeman.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 19/12/2016 17:50

He had police ID, but wasn't necessarily a policeman.

I hope he wasn't, that would be worse.

EagleIsland · 19/12/2016 17:52

It all comes down to who the gunman is affiliated to, if it ISIS then expect a renewed offensive in Syria. Turkey will get a political slapping for poor secretary, and allowing this to happen.

If it's found that the gunman was sponsored by Turkey.....who knows. But NATO will be watching, if Russia strikes Turkey NATO will be expected to support Turkey

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 19/12/2016 17:54

Russian Speaker of parliament says this mustn't affect relations between the countries.

So, that's good.

EagleIsland · 19/12/2016 18:04

In all likelihood nothing will happen over this However The worst case scenario that I now see playing out is as follows:

There is a large amount of Navel activity in the med right now. Russia sends aircraft from its carrier into Turkish airspace as a show of force. The Turkish Air Force intercept the Russians, a misunderstanding happens and An Turkish fighter gets shot down by the Russians.

Turkey in retaliation launches a strike on the Russian carrier task force.

The Russian Submarine accompanying the task force strikes back with cruse missiles,

What happens next depends on weather NATO then steps in with British or American naval assets in the med,

Manumission · 19/12/2016 18:05

How have we got a situation, this far in in history, where so much scary power lies in the hands of such reactive ego-driven men?

britbat23 · 19/12/2016 18:10

The Russians find this hard to stomach

heartskey · 19/12/2016 18:16

Russia doesn't want trouble with Turkey, otherwise they'd have responded when their plane go shot down. Taking on Turkey is taking on Nato, I can't see them having the stomach for that.

Manumission · 19/12/2016 18:17

Brit behave 😏

EagleIsland · 19/12/2016 18:19

don't you just love auto correct

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/12/2016 18:22

it's one of those head in hands moments. My first reaction was 'for pities sake'.

AyeAye · 19/12/2016 18:28

My first reaction is - 'stock up on tinned food, bottled water and iodine tablets' tbh.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 19/12/2016 18:34

I too think nothing will happen between the two countries and Nato.

Aleppo, however is a worry.

notaflyingmonkey · 19/12/2016 18:44

AJ are saying it was a policeman, who said it was revenge for Aleppo.

whyohwhy000 · 19/12/2016 18:47

It says "A gunman has shot dead Russia's ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, apparently in protest at Russia's involvement in the Syrian conflict."

I'm off to Tescos on the way home for tinned food and bottled water!

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 19/12/2016 20:09

Police have arrested the sister and the mother of the shooter.

Poor women.

Muppetslikecoco · 19/12/2016 20:13

Another lorry attack in Germany too Sad

LouiseBrooks · 19/12/2016 20:16

They are suggesting it's a "lone wolf" as the media say and that he was an off-duty policeman. Reports have confirmed that people are saying he said it was because of Aleppo.. I just hope to God this doesn't derail the evacuation, footage from there today is awful. There stilll seem to be thousands left in there, including children.

And yes, sympathies to the Ambassador's family.

And now there appears to be a terrorist attack on a German market.

And Uk made cluster bombs found in Yemen

What a fecking awful world.

Why isn't Turkey being kicked out of NATO? They should be. I don't want to be dragged into a war on behalf of that insane monster Erdogan.

CoteDAzur · 20/12/2016 00:28

"Putin won't take a serious loss at Muslim hands calmly."

That is exactly what he did, actually.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the killing of the Russian ambassador to Ankara is designed to spoil Russian-Turkish ties.

Putin is a pragmatist, not a knee-jerk reactionary with impulse control issues like Trump.

CoteDAzur · 20/12/2016 00:32

"Why isn't Turkey being kicked out of NATO? They should be."

Because a terrorist shouting Allahuakbar shot someone? That is a really daft thing to say.

"I don't want to be dragged into a war on behalf of that insane monster Erdogan."

So your theory is that Erdogan ordered that man to shoot the Russian Ambassador publicly, on stage, in front of cameras? So that he could cause himself problems in his own dealings with Putin?

You will have to think a little harder if you want to make sense when commenting on this stuff.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 20/12/2016 07:36

Putin has form when dealing with islamist insurgence. He had to deal with Whabbists blowing up apartment blocks full of people sleeping in their beds back in the late 1990's. I suspect the destruction of Aleppo has been influenced by those bombings.

Against that background it is seems that Erdogan wants to embrace islam and turn Turky from a secular state into an islamic government. Erdogan may condenm the shooting in public. However, the murderer appears to be a muslim claiming to stand up for the defence of muslims against non muslims. This complicates matters.

CoteDAzur · 20/12/2016 10:19

"He had to deal with Whabbists"

Who? Grin The word is Wahhabi.

"I suspect the destruction of Aleppo has been influenced by those bombings."

And I suspect Putin remembers Chechens were hitting back then because Russian military was brutally destroying their homeland for having refused to be part of Russian federation after Soviet Russia collapsed. Not for no reason.

"Against that background it is seems that Erdogan wants to embrace islam and turn Turky from a secular state into an islamic government."

Oh there is so much wrong with this sentence Smile

(1) There is no Russian/Chechen "background" for Erdogan's plans

(2) If Erdogan wants you gone, you get thrown into jail with no charge, for years. Not executed publicly by a lone gunman.

(3) Erdogan has been Islamicising Turkey for over a decade. But to you, he only just "seems" like he wants to embrace Islam & turn Turkey from secular to Islamic state now? Really?

Where have you been when he reversed the ban on headscarves for school children, opened thousands of schools for imams, changed education system to allow their graduates to enter universities, decapitated the army on false coup accusations and replaced all top brass with his people?

"Erdogan may condenm the shooting in public. However, the murderer appears to be a muslim claiming to stand up for the defence of muslims against non muslims. This complicates matters."

Only if you are completely ignorant of the fact that a powerful Islamist organization has been battling Erdogan's group for power.

FFS are you really so clueless that you think everyone shouting Allahuakbar are on the same side?
