The abuser apologists I've seen (not on MN - haven't followed any threads here) have made me sick. Remember the video showing him kicking the kitchen cabinets and throwing things at her? I read endless comments of:

1. She provoked him.
2. She edited the video.
3. Everybody gets angry sometimes and it was no big deal.

And the "best" one...

Since the government has taken away Legal Aid, there is now way a person can get a divorce without having a few thousand saved.
It is so unfair that only people with money can get out of an unhappy marriage.
My friend has no money, her husband takes care of all the finances of the home, she has his credit card to use for the weekly shop, he gives her £40 cash, he won't let her work, as he does different hours and wants the comforts of home when he returns, they aren't poor, but she relays totally on him for money, what is she to do? There is no one to help her, we have tried, there is no one who knows of any help.
She doesn't have parents or siblings, I can't afford to lend her enough, she will get some settlement at the end, but no one will help now! She could sell her wedding ring/engagement ring? Probably get her through some of it.
He would probably stretch it out for so long, that she will run out of money anyway. Then what???? ( he is mentally abusive, has ground her down)
Kids are 18,19, still at home, both with diabetes.
There must be some help, in this day and age, for her.
Any ideas anyone.... Please!!

Court fees are still reduced or removed for those who cannot afford to pay.

If the couple can agree the financial settlement solicitors fees may be just a few hundred pounds.

Provided costs don't rack up too much many solicitors will be happy to wait for payment until the financial settlement.

The first step for your friend would be to book an appointment with a solicitor. Many will give a free 30 minute consultation. This will, at least, give her some idea of her options. A solicitor would also be able to advise her of what would happen if her husband does try to stretch out proceedings.

You can easily do the divorce papers yourself, the court staff will help you fill them in but cannot give legal advice.

Could Women's Aid help your friend?

I don't like Johnny Depp and had never heard of this woman, but she didn't need the money and by doing this, she is getting the level of publicity and adoration that frankly she would never be able to pay for.

You can get divorced for free however fighting through the courts for what's legally hers is very difficult if you have an abudive asshole.
I would say ffs do not divorce him. Do not let that absolute go through until she has 60-70% of everything in a consent order.

And that's where it gets tricky without money.

And nobody gave me a free 30 mins, I called 60 at least all £200 + vat.

Yet the bloody awful accusations accusing Amber of doing just that go on and on.

Yet they are both donating to a good cause.

Says it all.

Why go public? Maybe to raise awareness? Or to show she has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of? If it can happen to a beautiful actress who has married someone many women have fantasised over (obvs not now, he's in a right state) it can happen to anyone. Maybe it will give other women the strength to realise it is not their fault and that they need to break free too.
