I think its disgusting

Fun?? FUN?? .. its theft .. its dishonesty and its criminal

NorksBride · 23/01/2007 22:22

It would be nice if the company that owned the container ship tried to recover some of it's clients goods. Given that the clients had paid them and all...

wickedwaterwitchhaspmt · 23/01/2007 22:31

I thought this was awful yesterday when I heard it, it's not their stuff, surely it's not on to just go and take it, it's awful.

TheArmadillo · 23/01/2007 22:33

according to Western Daily PRess today
it is not illegal to take stuff as long as you fill out a form with name and address and I think what you have taken as well. The owners of the property then have 1 year to ask for it back. If you don't return the property then you face a fine of £2,500.

It falls under maritime laws rather than British law.

WDP didn't have any mention of personal possessions, but did report that there were so many looters police were having problems filling in all the forms and recording who took what.

I think there's gonna be huge problems when people come to claim possessions back

NotAnOtter · 23/01/2007 22:34

gosh there are so many worse things going on in the world this is really quite trivial imho

pianist · 23/01/2007 22:34

Can't believe these people were allowed to get away with it! Why did it take until tonight to put up the fences?

tissy · 24/01/2007 07:09

notanotter, if you were the one who has had the entire contents of your house, which had washed up, relatively unscathed on a beach stolen, you wouldn't think it was trivial, because wrose things were happening elsewhere...

" oh, it's OK, there's a war in Iraq, and famine in Africa, so I don't really mind that thieves have stolen all my possessions and scattered my family photos over a beach"

That family must be devastated.

Twiglett · 24/01/2007 13:01

why do I keep reading this as lobsters?

"Has your opinion of the lobsters changed now then?"

well, no I still think they're delicious

TwoIfBySea · 24/01/2007 13:48

Imagine you saw those looters raking through your stuff, it is like burglary! Shocking that people see it as alright to rob on a grand scale like this.

The police should be ashamed of themselves. If anyone knows of stolen goods on eBay then they should contact them to let them know. What if someone stole something from a house and then put it up on eBay? It is the same thing when it is someones possession.

Ripeberry · 24/01/2007 17:16

Well, now the world think we in the UK are just a load of thieving racists. What with that fiasco on Big Brother last week.
Hope those BMW motorbikes break down and rust!

laneydaye · 24/01/2007 17:18

dirty thieving money grabbing scrubbers....the looters that is.

NotAnOtter · 24/01/2007 17:19

tissy - iam sure but its only material possessions - REALLy not the end of the world

HOWEVER over on another thread on mumsnet we are all decrying (wrong word?) the NSPCC for offending us with their literature

I feel its time a lot of us woke up and thought about what really matters

laneydaye · 24/01/2007 17:22

What doesnt matter to one person really could feel like the end of the world for others......

NotAnOtter · 24/01/2007 17:23

well in that case those people need to get real
Its stuff- not people not lives or deaths or diease famine holocaust just things

I am shocked by this thread

burstingbug · 24/01/2007 17:39

Theres been a lot of Environment agency vehicles at the bottom of our road, think they're keeping a close eye on Chesil beach, I've heard they're expecting pollution & things to be washed up here. There were loads of dead birds and a porpouise last week, god knows what there will be now I've not gone down to see.

Flamesparrow · 24/01/2007 18:13

I'm sorry but lol @ "This is really indicative of the mess our society is in.This mentality of get something for nothing and gotta have it now"

They have been wreckin off the coasts for centuries! Nothing to do with society today, its just bikes instead of brandy.

Not saying that its right, just that its not about how society is deteriorating.

TwoIfBySea · 24/01/2007 19:19

But Flamesparrow, in the Poldark days the people had nothing, they took things because it would mean their families might eat that week (or get blinding drunk.)

We are supposed to be better edumacated now. We do not lack for the basics as they did way back when. These people are not stealing for survival, they are stealing for greed. At some point you have to see the morals of stealing things when you are not wanting for anything.

These people are stealing anything just to take it, because it was free. I would imagine if there was a container of poo they would have stolen that as well, they buy anything on eBay.

Flamesparrow · 24/01/2007 19:32

What I meant was that the stealing wasn't new - i completely agree that the circumstances etc are all different now.
