Sorry if this has already been covered but I only just heard this story and am horrified.

My understanding is that at an antisemetism event Jeremy Corbyn made an antisemetic comment. Ruth Smeeth, a Jewish Labour MP challenged him on it and was shouted down by someone thought to have links with the Momentum group, accused of colluding with the media and had to leave the room in floods of tears.

"And why was Wadsworth giving out activist leaflets in a meeting intended to discuss anti-semitism?"

Because that's what happens in political meetings!

hackmum · 04/07/2016 16:02

"look how quickly 'israel' is brought into the discussion when discussing jewishness"

The first person to bring Israel into the discussion was horsemadmom and the second was BertrandRussell, who wrote "And Jewish people at large are not responsible for the behaviour of the state of Israel."

The next person to mention Israel was samG76, and then after that River Tam.

In other words, it seems unlikely that they are the same people "who will jump down posters throats moaning how they cannot criticise israel without being called an antisemite".

So perhaps you should think carefully before you start labelling people as "fucking hypocrites"? Perhaps instead you could try engaging in a calm and rational manner with what people have actually said, rather than getting angry about what you imagine they might have said?

gettingbythistime · 04/07/2016 16:07

fair point in this instance but it is pretty normal behaviour here on MN for it to have been the way i described

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/07/2016 16:08

So Shami apologised. Shame Corbyn doesn't appear to have done the same.

Ruth Smeeth
BertrandRussell · 04/07/2016 16:09

How about you wait til someon's been a fucking hypocrite before you throw accusations about?

samG76 · 04/07/2016 17:42

Pleased to see JC getting some major flak from the committee as to why he hasn't spoken to Ruth Smeeth to apologise but has spoken to Wadsworth a few times without mentioning that what he said was unacceptable. Apparently JC "didn't know" that Ruth had walked out. there's a lot of "not knowing" among him and his mates, I can't help noticing...

As for Flynn (who said that the Israeli ambassador should have English roots and not be Jewish (sic)), can you imagine what would happen if someone said that a black ambassador was unsuitable for a foreign posting for the same reason. They would rightly be regarded as racist and thrown out of the party forever. But with Jews this doesn't seem to apply.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/07/2016 17:47

He has come accross in that select committee as completely incompetent.

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2016 17:47

Would you have expected Corbyn to apologise if Smeeth had not been Jewish?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/07/2016 17:50

Yes. The comments were completely inappropriate and visibly upset her.

Shami apologised. He hasn't.

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2016 20:10

Gosh. You can't have had much involvement with politics!

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/07/2016 20:31

Yes I have actually. Lots.

Rainbunny · 06/07/2016 19:39

Corbyn's mealy mouthed silence on the anti-semitism problem in the Labour party is about as convincing as his "pro-remain" status! Why he can't just come out and sincerely condemn the thinly veiled and often blatantly anti-semitic comments in his party? It makes me think he doesn't care in the least and perhaps silently approves of it at the worst.

Interestingly it looks like Labour is getting financially hit by this as prominent donors are withdrawing financial support. Can't say I blame them.
