I am worried about the way the papers collude in creating heroes and villains for us all.
It is pantomime at the most basic level.

I wouldn't agree with that comment at all - you can be stupid and not be racist. I would say the opposite is true - that at some level all racists are stupid. Too stupid to notice that race makes no difference to whether a person is worth knowing etc.

he does equate stupidity with ignorance throughout the article - of course it is ignorance that breeds prejudice (of which racism is one type)

so perhaps it would have been more accurate to say "all racists are ignorant"

ignorant people (i.e. goody) tend not to be interested in knowledge or opposing views hence their automatic admission to the world of the ignorant !

Hercules, for evidence that TV is terribly dumbed down, just look at what they show on BBC4 - programmes like Yes Minister that were mainstream Beeb 1 in the 80s are now on a minority channel. And when you look at them, they are so slow compared to today's TV ie demanding much more sustained attention. Basically YM is three men in a room. No way you'd get away with that on a major channel today.

BB is so nervous that we'll get bored watching one person talk that even the stuff from the diary room is intercut (with pictures of the door handle, FFS) every five seconds.

He does put it all really well but he clearly doesn't watch the programme, must have just dipped in to write this - Jade was never "sweetly ignorant" and she certainly had the confidence to be a horrible aggressive bully in her first BB. ANd he's made me feel a bit ashamed of watching it! But he won't stop me!

Not voting any more though as a small protest against Endemol.
