She sent this Chick Tract

along with a letter, essentially saying that Islam is Satanic, to the headteacher of Manchester Islamic High school for Girls.

She has been convicted of sending an offensive communication.

Are you a journo looking for bait? Am perplexed tbh.

Anyway. I'm out.

RickRoll · 09/12/2015 14:20

The law requires that she intends to cause distress and/or anxiety. So that must be her intent, or one of them.

You are a fuckwit. Everything you hold dear is evil. Your cat is a murderer. Your dog is, too.

What was my intent when I wrote that, to my ex best friend, whose lifestyle I hold in contempt?

And if you say anything other than "Why, Blanche, you were pointing her towards the way out of her predicament. You intend to save her mortal soul, you lovely woman, you" I shall see you hoist upon the same petard that despicable poltroon shall die upon!

Not exactly nice, is it? But does it break a law?

Is that what you are asking? Or are you just sitting back and poking the MNet every now and then?

Inkanta · 09/12/2015 15:57

What this 68 woman wrote is very bizarre ...the sort of delusional rant a person having a psychotic episode could say. Wonder if she has mental health issues??

OurBlanche · 09/12/2015 16:11

She is a new convert to Christianity, so is probably being overly zealous, a tad fundamental and literal about it. She has said God told her to do it. Given that this is not itself, apparently, a sign of any mental health issue, we can but wonder...

Inkanta · 09/12/2015 16:21

Is it possible she could have a grandiose delusional disorder which is categorized by an inflated sense of knowledge and special relationship with God??

OurBlanche · 09/12/2015 16:31

No idea. I'm just a MNer...

BertrandRussell · 09/12/2015 16:33

But having a special relationship with God and him talking to you and telling you what to do is not a sign of any mental health issue at all.

claig · 09/12/2015 16:34

'Is it possible she could have a grandiose delusional disorder which is categorized by an inflated sense of knowledge and special relationship with God??'

Like Tony Blair, you mean? I suppose anything is possible.

OurBlanche · 09/12/2015 16:38

I'm glad it wasn't just me who was thinking along those lines Smile

Inkanta · 09/12/2015 17:15

'But having a special relationship with God and him talking to you and telling you what to do is not a sign of any mental health issue at all.'

Isn't it?

A psychiatric perspective might view such thoughts as disordered or delusional, whereby a person cannot tell what is real from what is imagined.

i think in this case it was the wrong decision to prosecute but it will certainly achieve the aims of the lady so in a sense she is the pure winner here. No other way would haev got her ideas as much publicity.

As for the publication I want people to be free to write what they like - to say in mosques that women must serve men, to say what the Christian leaflet says at the end which hugely offends me - that women serve men. I don't want to censor of them even Muslims saying jews are pigs or gays evil.

Let us have more rights to offend. Je suis Charlie.

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 12/12/2015 22:51

What kind of society would we live in if everyone went around insulting like you described DeoGratias?
Fair enough to debate but to just insult? Jews are pigs? Gays are evil?
It would be horrendous. A society full of hate. Surely it's better to be respectful and debate issues that you may not agree on.

BarbarianMum · 14/12/2015 15:15

So, you want to live in a society where it's OK to verbally abuse people in the street because of their sex, sexuality, race or religion? Where 'spaz' and 'mong' can be used freely with no comeback?

I don't. In fact I am struggling to see how the freedom to offend differs from the freedom to be verbally abusive.

DeoGratias · 14/12/2015 15:45

We have gone too far the other way to curbing freedom of speech. People get too upset too quickly and should instead cry in corners or get therapy. Let us be free to produce Jesus and Mo cartoons and if people don't like them tough - they can go to countries which censor you. There are more than enough of those on the planet.

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 14/12/2015 20:23

Parody, satire and wit is different to just outright offending someone just for the sake of it.
What would you gain by having the freedom to tell some they're a pig and evil just because of their religion?
