Hello all

George Osborne will set out the government's spending plans in the Autumn Statement and Spending Review at 12.30pm today. It's the first since the Conservatives were elected, and Osbourne looks set to announce the detail of £20bn of cuts to departmental budgets, and £12bn cuts to welfare. He'll promise £7bn for new housebuilding, and will also announce plans to mitigate the effects of tax credit cuts, after the government's original measures were blocked by the House of Lords last month.

Let us know what you think of the plans here, and do join us for the Statement itself at 12.30pm to watch live - we'll be embedding a live feed from the BBC at about 11.45am.

There's been rumours that he's going to cut housing benefit instead. Any info on that yet? Can't watch it due to dcs.

Hi all,

We totally get that this is a hugely emotive time but can we please remind you of our Talk Guidelines specifically posts that are beyond the pale.

Thank you

GingerIvy · 25/11/2015 12:59

I think they tried to implement the cuts into UC, but IDS actually blocked it, saying no. (always a first, I suppose)

AskingForAPal · 25/11/2015 12:59

Not yet I think Ginger.

howtorebuild · 25/11/2015 12:59

Yes he cut new tenancy hb, and those out of the country over a month.

MorrisZapp · 25/11/2015 13:02

Blimey. He doesn't half go on.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/11/2015 13:02

So has he said where the £12bn cuts to welfare are coming from yet?

howtorebuild · 25/11/2015 13:03

Accounting experts, working out new evasions as he speaks.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/11/2015 13:04

Watching BBC summary....

+£12bn weapons

  • £4 bn nhs
  • £12bn welfare

Nice priorities...

sugar21 · 25/11/2015 13:04

Yes there's nothing like a bit of creative accounting

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/11/2015 13:05

Listened to concerns about tax credits my arse - couldn't have a another slapdown from HoL, and as he said being phased out anyway

NewLife4Me · 25/11/2015 13:09

So 12bn for war Sad
Paid for by the tax payer, the same people who have lost tc and cb

GingerIvy · 25/11/2015 13:13

They do seem to have a list of the more vulnerable groups, so they can rotate among them for who to take money and funding from. It's very much an exercise in "take from this group until they kick off, then move on to the next group." Hmm

howtorebuild · 25/11/2015 13:15

For a war most people don't want, who is going to become collateral damage during this war?

howtorebuild · 25/11/2015 13:18

So people struggle to obtain a mortgage, they want to sell off council housing and cut new hb claims?

GingerIvy · 25/11/2015 13:23

inequality, child poverty are down??? what world is he living in??

LIZS · 25/11/2015 13:23

Don't think they had any real intention of cutting tcs but by "cancelling" it those potentially affected are relieved. Wtf re tampon tax going to Women's Health, women still contribute to men's health care.Hmm

TheFairyCaravan · 25/11/2015 13:25

So student nurses aren't getting bursaries anymore but someone on £99k can get free childcare? It makes absolutely no fucking sense!

GingerIvy · 25/11/2015 13:26

it sounds like they expect us to be grateful. I'm not impressed.

GingerIvy · 25/11/2015 13:27

I don't understand this childcare thing. They said there was no funding for it ages ago and axed it. Why is it a thing again now??

howtorebuild · 25/11/2015 13:28

The child care thing is due to WEP pressure.

They think loans instead of grants means more will want to become students. Confused

FabFlo · 25/11/2015 13:33

Does anybody actually know what the changes to housing benefit will be?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/11/2015 13:36

I think I saw same cap applied to social housing as private rentals?

megletthesecond · 25/11/2015 13:40

Nothing that will directly benefit me then. No surprise there.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/11/2015 13:40

They think loans instead of grants means more will want to become students.

They could have filled every place 16 times on the course DS2 is on, unfortunately the ConDems cut student nurse places. I'm glad DS2 started his degree this year and is not going to be saddled with the debt.
