Death of Pinochet

tribpot · 10/12/2006 21:40

Pinochet dies, aged 91 .

I'm not Chilean, although I love Chile and used to live with a Chilean guy, so in some ways this is quite close to me and in others quite far away.

I remember my boyfriend's mum telling me how she was 'disappeared' with my boyfriend, when he was about the age my ds is now. The mind boggles. Fortunately they were not gone for long, but my boyfriend's dad was in prison for about 10 years. I have Chilean friends with that whole 'fear of uniform' thing where seeing the police even in this country (I hope we can get on board with the idea of our police not being prone to disappearing people) is very scary.

I had no idea Shelia Cassidy had been in Chile. She's an amazing woman actually, achieves an enormous amount. I had a Chilean friend who had to leave quickly.

Wow - so the old bastard is finally dead.

And yeah, shame he never stood trial. I wonder if there's an afterlife, and if so what he's doing in it? I hope it's something like eternally sound-testing the entire Westlife back-catalog, in each of 37 languages.

SherlockLGJ · 11/12/2006 10:52

Bump for the day shift.

ruty · 11/12/2006 13:14

best news i've heard for ages. Maybe reincarnation exits and he and Thatcher will both come back as rats in the same sewer.

franca70 · 11/12/2006 14:30

yes, shame he never stood trial.
One of the reasons why the Americans wanted to get rid of Allende was because he wanted to nationalize Chile's natural gas...

donnie · 11/12/2006 20:20

I am a firm believer in just desserts, whether in this life or afterwards.....

no rest for the wicked.

whatwouldjesusdo · 11/12/2006 21:19

I would love to have some meaningful insight into why Margaret Thatcher is so keen on Pinochet. It isnt enough to say "because they are both as bad" (after all, the only PM to "disappear" people in the UK is Tony Blair remember)

expatinscotland · 11/12/2006 21:20

If there's a hell I hope he's there.

PannintheChristmasPeaks · 11/12/2006 21:37

They are both fascist bastards.

Thatcher is getting panned(!) in the polls prior to 1983 election, no way out it seems..until Argentina take an apparent cue, and land on South Gerogia in the Falklands...we heroically fight them, with logistical support from Chile, Argentinas arch rival in S. America.

So Thatcher is "in bed" with Regan AND Pinochet. Such taste. Made you proud to be British at the time....

whatwouldjesusdo · 11/12/2006 21:46

ah, so then she appointed herself his personal apologist in payment of the debt! She is an idiot!

PannintheChristmasPeaks · 11/12/2006 21:50

Well, she 'saved' an election out of it, and he got a powerful ally in the world.....

wrinklytum · 11/12/2006 23:19

Dead is best place for him IMHO.Visited Allendes' grave in Santiago.Very moving.Stories of Disappeared and torture and rape quite horrendous.Chile a most beautiful country and deserves to be free of this devilish presence.

expatinscotland · 11/12/2006 23:21

I hope dogs dig him up and devour him and leave what's left to carrion.

wrinklytum · 11/12/2006 23:25

Ditto Expat.

PannintheChristmasPeaks · 11/12/2006 23:25

Anyone remember Elvis Costello's "Tramp the Dirt Down" from the mid-80's? Expessing his desire to perform this act at Thatcher's burial site.

expatinscotland · 11/12/2006 23:26

That still wouldn't be fitting enough for him.

I hate the death penalty, but people like him truly make me want to vomit.

He makes me want to spit.

PannintheChristmasPeaks · 11/12/2006 23:31

just a taster..

"I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
Face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
Coming down on that child's lips

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
Long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down"

Bit shocking atthe time as he was a popular performer, and she was at the height of power.

wrinklytum · 11/12/2006 23:33

Expat are you Chilean?I spent the happiest few weeks of my life in this beautiful country.(Barring the hapiness of having my kids) and my parents worked overseas with a good friend,a Chilean guy whose family had been torn apart by Pinochets regime. He is a very warm lovely guy and his history is so tragic. The wanton destruction of lives is so sad

expatinscotland · 11/12/2006 23:35

No, I'm the grandchild of two Mexicans. My father has a Mexican passport. We spent 7 years of my childhood in S. America w/his work, years during which Pinochet was at the height of his power.

Scumbag. Bastard. Murderer. Rapist. Torturer.

One of the worst excuses for a human on the planet.

dara · 11/12/2006 23:39

Of course the vile old witch is 'saddened' they were soulmates. I'd quite enjoy a nice little dance on his grave - and hers. But don't think Maggie alone is his defender. the Blair government (spit) saved him from justice when Straw declared him unfit to stand trial five years ago. A disgraceful decision but typical of the extremist far right Blair government.

dara · 11/12/2006 23:40

I think anyone who votes Labour is declaring their support for Pinochet, Bush, Guantanamo Bay and the whole disgusting fascist set up.

wrinklytum · 11/12/2006 23:43

Yes,an evil man.(I must go now cos dd screaming.Shes poorly poor mite.)A shame he never achieved his retribution in this life.As for Thatcher..words fail me!

alibauble · 12/12/2006 00:24

Expat I'm with you - may he rot in hell for what he did to the people of Chile. May the disappeared never ever be forgotten.

missymoosal · 12/12/2006 00:44

Only the good die young so they say. And dear old Maggie T has to comment about her 'sorrow' at his passing.
Hope there is a nice hot corner of hell waiting for him with space for her aswell.

ruty · 12/12/2006 09:39

unfortunately what you say is true dara. Never thought i would be saying that when Labour came to power in 97.
