Don't know if it is possible to predict tornadoes.

A friend in Queen's Park sent me a message today to say there'd been a hurricane - I thought she was joking...

MerryChristmasfromQV · 07/12/2006 17:35

You cant predict specific tornadoes (unlike hurricanes), but you can assess a likelihood of them occuring due to certain weather conditions.

Not really done in this country because, despite there being many occurances - they are usually very small and cause little or no damage.

paulaplumpbottom · 07/12/2006 17:45

You can't predict a tornado. They are completly laws unto themselves and can last for a few seconds(like the one today) or go on for an hour. They will be going one direction one minute and the other the next. When I was 12 a bad tornado hit the southside of the town I grew up in. It devestated huge tracts of land and several subdivisions. I saw two houses completely wrecked and the one between them not touched at all. It was weird.

southeastastra · 07/12/2006 19:06

its so scary, i'm nervous now, i hope this doesn't mean we'll start getting them alot

We do get them alot SEA, they just dont normally hit such built up areas, and arent normally as strong. Dont be frightened.

Very windy as we were walking to and from ds1's day visit to his preschool! Not sure that helped him like the concept!
LOL at you all being 'forced' into cafe Nero We stopped off for coffee afterwards and got takeaway...duh! Had 3 messages from dh whilst on our visit, panicking that we'd get blown away en route home. Ah!

wickedwinterwitch · 07/12/2006 19:51

omg, ex mil is near there, will call her. All this freak weather stuff's getting a bit scary innit?

paulaplumpbottom · 07/12/2006 20:37

I wouldn't worry too much yall. I don't think they get terribly bad tornados here.

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 07/12/2006 20:41

I was standing at the window with ds4 this afternoon watching the rain, wind, rainbow action when a tree in the neighbour's garden blew over - not near house luckily but it made a horrendous crack, and just went over really slowly, bit surreal and it made me cry.

Jimjams2 · 07/12/2006 20:41

We had a tornado in our garden in the summer- never seen anything like it!

We had hurricaine force winds on Saturday and our fence blew down.

paulaplumpbottom · 07/12/2006 20:57

Have they said at all what they thin is causing this unusual weather?

beansprout · 07/12/2006 21:11

It's a mess up there. I walked past it on the way to pick up ds. Lots of roads still sealed off, some shops boarded up, and hey, quite a number of roofing contractors milling around! Very odd.
Seems that some of the houses will need to be demolished. My god, how do you deal with your home having to be demolished?

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 07/12/2006 21:14

It'll at least make a good xmas earner for some roofers i suppose.
Where are you then??

paulaplumpbottom · 07/12/2006 21:15

At Christmas to.

beansprout · 07/12/2006 21:27

I'm off Wrottesley Road, about half a mile from it all.

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 07/12/2006 21:29

Big big relief at your house then, I should think.

beansprout · 07/12/2006 21:31

Was more concerned about our childminder who is a lot nearer. There is another MNer whose house really is right up there in the middle of it, but thankfully they are away at the moment.

All very weird.
