Fires have been burning for weeks, millions of people are affected by pollution levels off the scale.

For comparison, all the billions of pounds we spent on reducing CO2 outputs, etc., for vehicles in the UK are irrelevant against the scale of carbon emissions from these burning forests.

Also the deforestation is heavily driven by western demand, firstly for the EU, which decided that biofuels were a good idea, resulting in loss of forests in Asia to plant palm oil, and secondly for palm oil, which since the 'trans fat' health scare, is basically the only oil used in food products in the west (things like Nutella are basically 30% palm oil)

I saw this for the first time today - apparently the amount of carbon dioxide from these fires is greater than that produced by all the cars in the USA in a day! People are dying, entire ecosystems over wide areas being destroyed, and the impact is global as well as regional. There's an article on the Guardian website though I don't have time to find the link right now.

no, not all the cars in the USA, the entire US economy.
