Have been feeling so upset since my DH came home from work to say he'd just attended a house fire (police) where a 6 mth old and 18mth old were killed. All 3 kids were in their bedroom, 3 yr old had manged to get hold of a lighter and was playing and managed to set their bed clothes alight.

Mum and dad are obviously beside themselves with grief and are blaming the 3 yr old, won't have anything to do with him - Its so sad, this little boys life will be ruined before its even begun, imagine living with that guilt!!

Dh went back round to the hous to pick up keys and stuff for the family, what really got to him was seeing nappies on the side in the kitchen, so simple yet so poignent.

Can't stop thining about that poor poor family, perfectly normal one day then gone the next!! gave my 15mth DD and extra big cuddle last night!

that they are blaming the 3 year old - surely they should be blaming themselves for leaving a lighter where a 3 year old could get it

How very sad though

Oh I feel sick to the stomach when I read this sort of thing. What an absolutely horrific thing to happen. I hope the parents can overcome their grief enough to forgive their 3yr old for the mistake of playing with a lighter(albeit one with tragic consequences). I can imagine why they are feeling like this although as miaou said, ultimately they should't have let their 3yr old have access to a lighter. What an absolute bl**dy nightmare.
Your dh is so brave doing a job like that, it must take a toll on him too.

mumandlovingit · 24/09/2006 08:10

no idea how your dh copes with things like that an a regular basis at work.ive got tears jus reading about it.my so called friend lets her 2 year old hold her lighter as she doesnt know how to use it! how dumb s that, she'll learn one day!
there's not oe lighter or match where any children can get them in my house and when we go to other people's houses i always move any that i can see.god fobid if that ever happened to my children id never forgive myself.blaming the child, how sick is that.why did it have access to a lighter in he first place! a child knows no better and experiments! thats like saying 'he drank the bleach silly child' it s a parents responsibility to make sure the children are as saf as possible.

i cant even spell properly this morning.reading something like that really gets to me now ive got children.

GarfieldsGirl · 24/09/2006 08:26

The parents are blaming the 3 year old?!?!? . They obviously left the lighter where he can get a it, they have to be the ones to blame. How do they think that poor little boy is going to feel once he's old enough to understand what happened and why?

What I can never understand in cases like these is how/why did the parents come out unharmed while young children are seriously ill, or as in this case killed? DP and I always get upset seeing cases like this and question exactly that. There is no way you would get me out of a burning building without my children.

hooleymama · 24/09/2006 09:37

my boy is 8 mths , this breaks my heart
I would blame myself not the 3 yr old.poor little guy. If anything he's even more precious, they could have lost him too.

Its so awful. There was a similar fire here not long ago, though the children got out, 1 has had to have skin grafts. The mum left a lighter in a bag in their wardrobe ffs! I'm sorry but maybe if the parents were prosecuted for being so stupid, it might wake others up.

savannahsmum · 24/09/2006 21:48

I suppose grief affects people in different ways. Really hope when the shock subsides a little they'll take him back into their hearts, he's gonna need a lot of love and support to get through this!

Made dh check our fire alam tonight - no lighters/matches in this house!!
