Good news though, it's where the ice is thinner so less flooding hopefully.

OYBBK, thanks for that link.

Glace, thats the one I'm looking at!

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 23/08/2014 17:33

I do think that the biggest risk at the moment is locally with the potential for a glacial burst or jökulhlaup. It is in an uninhabited area but there are usually a lot of tourists in that region and so they have evacuated to the NE of it.

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 17:33

Me too now, I gave up on the first. MILA wouldn't load for me earlier but it is now. It looks like gas plumes or ash doesn't it?

Me too! It does look interesting. Two focal points for the rising steam or ash or whatever it is?

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 23/08/2014 17:36

I think it might be mostly steam at present. The right hand plume doesn't look dark enough for ash.

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 17:39

I wondered about ash over the far left of the picture.

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 23/08/2014 17:42

Its cleared on the left from what it was 20mins ago.

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 17:42

Flightradar shows a helicopter flying over the south coast of Iceland at the moment.

Unrelated, apparently it's a sandstorm on Bardarbunga at the moment.

volcano cafe blog has a piece about potential risks for the volcano. Well worth a read for those concerned.

RedToothBrush · 23/08/2014 17:56

There is a recon flight still scheduled to fly over the area this afternoon. So they obviously think its safe enough to over still.

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 17:57

Yes, looks that way. It's on flight radar at the moment I think, heading north of the volcano area.

it's a dust storm not the eruption showing on that webcam. Which makes sense as the eruption is currently sub glacial and that is not a glacier.

PacificDogwood · 24/08/2014 16:03

Anybody know what the webcam is showing now?? Confused

Or is it covered in ash dust? Or rain?
Or is it broken?

I need to book my flight to Europe today - to book or not to book?
Ack.

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 24/08/2014 18:08

Is it poor weather showing?

Pacific if I were you I wouldn't cancel these things can rumble on for ages. I wouldn't even cancel a trip to iceland at this point.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/08/2014 18:45

The problems aren't with flying out, its getting stranded and flying back thats the problem...

Tell me about it!!! Speaking as someone who was stuck in Bngkok for six days after the last one, I wouldn't wish that on anyone

It does illustrate the "good news is no news" mentality of broadcasters, though. Needless to say we were glued to the TV and on the final morning there were dire warnings about how it could all last months- then they started flying around 12 noon GMT, and almost miraculously all the news items disappeared ...

scousadelic · 24/08/2014 18:59

We were stuck in Europe when the last one went off and have a holiday to USA planned in a couple of weeks :(

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 24/08/2014 19:15

One of the many contributing factors to last time was a large high pressure which kept the ash circulating over Europe. This time, although the ash if it were to be created would be steered over Europe it would be quickly carried away.

GlaceDragonflies · 24/08/2014 19:41

Is something happening now? Just seen this - or is 'low' cloud?

OP posts:
GlaceDragonflies · 24/08/2014 19:41

One of them has been broken since yesterday morning.
Flights are now flying over the volcano - commercial flights from the UK and Europe to the US and Canada.

It seems the alert level has been reduced again, phew!

Mind you, I would not have been devastated if I were stuck at my destination for a while Grin
