Sudanese woman given death sentence for apostasy

Story here. So, this woman is going to be whipped for adultery, because having sex with her Christian husband counts as adultery, then hanged for believing in the wrong god.

How fucked up is that? So gods do oneupmanship. Who knew? To me they're all equally ridiculous, but I wouldn't condemn somebody to death for being from a different branch of atheism.

'Who knew?'

I should imagine huge swatches of the Muslim world. You cannot recant from Islam. Countries with Sharia codes may well have corporal and capital punishment for actions they define as crimes, irrespective of legal codes elsewhere.

GladitsnotJustMe · 16/05/2014 11:28

I don't think it mentions it in the article linked, but I've read elsewhere that she is also 8 months pregnant. She will be allowed to have the baby, and will then be hanged.

It's just atrocious.

You cannot recant from Islam - I think this lady is saying that she was never a muslim, she has always been Christian, so in her eyes, she hasn't recanted from Islam - but I might be wrong.

nancy75 · 16/05/2014 13:52

"you cannot recant from Islam" Why?
Why should any country have the right to tell you want religion you must follow?
This is utterly atrocious.
What kind of religion wants followers that are forced to follow rather than those that actually believe (and that is not aimed at Islam, I would say the same no matter what the religion)

prh47bridge · 16/05/2014 14:10

She will be allowed to have the baby, and will then be hanged

My understanding is that she will face 100 lashes for adultery when she has had the baby, on the basis that her marriage is invalid. She will be executed when her baby is two.

I think this lady is saying that she was never a muslim

She is indeed. Her father was Muslim but apparently was largely absent so she was brought up as a Christian by her mother. Under Sudanese law she is automatically Muslim because her father was.

"Why should any country have the right to tell you want religion you must follow?
This is utterly atrocious."

It's just criminal. Who do these men think they are. Can nothing be done?

gamerchick · 16/05/2014 15:39

No, nothing can be done. As soon as anybody says anything negative about that particular religion people slap you down. You can only concentrate on the nice peaceful part of it.

it's like Voldemort.

BackOnlyBriefly · 16/05/2014 15:46

If you read the Muslim threads on MN you will soon discover that many refer to themselves as 'reverts' because everyone is Muslim by default from birth. Even all you Christians and Jews.

Therefore it follows that she (and all of us who refuse to become Muslim) have committed apostasy and we all deserve to die.

There's nothing we can do to help this poor woman unless we invade the country, but we should be aware of what Islam costs in terms of justice and decency.

Animation · 16/05/2014 15:52

Voldemort exactly! You can't just go around telling people how they should think and what they should believe and then kill them if they disagree.

That's not religion.

DoctorTwo · 16/05/2014 15:53

Why should any country have the right to tell you want religion you must follow?

In Saudi Arabia they recently passed a law which describes atheists as terrorists. Which is a touch ironic, given that 15 of the 19 men and women who flew planes into buildings on the 11th of September 2001 were members of the Wahhabi sect from Saudi Arabia.

Do other governments never challenge this practice or threaten sanctions?

meditrina · 16/05/2014 16:00

"Therefore it follows that she (and all of us who refuse to become Muslim) have committed apostasy and we all deserve to die."

Only if we have not had the opportunity to learn.

But of course now the kidnapped schoolgirls have converted there will be those who see them as Muslim and potentially committing apostasy if they do not live as Muslims henceforth (those who see it that way probably aren't worried about details such as free consent v duress)

This is worse because it changes the courses of people's lives. But is at root the same view that leads Mormons to convert your dead ancestors - they believe they are doing the right thing and spreading enlightenment.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 16/05/2014 16:01

This is horrendous.

Yet again, something that makes me very glad I (and my DCs) live in a country without sharia law.

meditrina · 16/05/2014 16:01

"Do other governments never challenge this practice or threaten sanctions?"

Frequently.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 16/05/2014 16:03

It also reminds me of Tudor times, when people were executed on mass for being the wrong sort of Christian.

This really shouldn't be happening in 2014.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 16/05/2014 16:07

This is awful. I know someone will come along and say that we can't take everyone who needs our help but I do think the UK or another western country should give this lady and her family asylum.

nancy75 · 16/05/2014 16:09

How can we give her asylum - She is locked up?

Dharmalovesdraco · 16/05/2014 16:10

I heard this today and just felt sick to my stomach :( Can nothing at all be done?

edamsavestheday · 16/05/2014 23:25

Horrifying.

I'm with Noarmani, we should give her refuge. Do a deal with the authorities to allow her and her dh safe passage out of the country and into the UK.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 16/05/2014 23:28

Terrifying.

Merel · 17/05/2014 00:44

Backwards :(

Animation · 17/05/2014 09:12

"Local media report the sentence on the woman, who is pregnant, would not be carried out for two years after she had given birth."

Good lord - she's also 8 months pregnant and apparently they won't hang her until her child is 2 years old!

They don't seem to see their wickedness at all.

Jinsei · 17/05/2014 09:23

This is an awful, awful situation, but please, do not let this become a general Islam-bashing thread. I know that my Muslim friends would be as horrified by this woman's plight as I am. :(

Does anybody know if there is a petition or something that we can sign asking our government to put more pressure on the Sudanese government to change their stance?

Animation · 17/05/2014 09:52

I personally think this has nothing to do with religion.

This is simply man's inhumanity to a woman and baby.

It's atrocious uncivilised behaviour.

CbeebiesIsAboutToPop · 17/05/2014 10:01

This is worse because it changes the courses of people's lives. But is at root the same view that leads Mormons to convert your dead ancestors - they believe they are doing the right thing and spreading enlightenment.

As a Mormon I'm going to disagree with this, I'm not going to get into an argument in this thread, but just wanted to poin out this isn't strictly true and the 2 are nothing alike.

As far as the op goes, it's just horrifying.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 17/05/2014 10:09

Quite Jinsei my Islamic friends are horrified and really upset.

The thing that bothers me is if someone thinks this is acceptable, no matter what place they go too they'll still harbour the same thoughts? But least we have laws to protect against this.

Good on those university students who took a stand against this. I don't know if I'd have their bravery. I
