Last September WillPenn started a discussion with the title "IPCC report: Why is no one on Mumsnet talking about climate change?"

We just had the third report from the IPCC AR5, on mitigation, and still there doesn't seem to be anyone discussing global warming. Surely it can't be the case that mums don't care about the world their children inherit, or think that looking after the planet is just a bloke thing. So why is it?

I agree with OP. finally there is a real conversation global-policy wise or at least it's hotting up no pun etc. my dp and I are talking about how we personally will Adapt to social change and unrest but noone in RL or mn seems to think about it. It's v scary but the sooner and the more we think about the more hope there is. Where are the mn-ers sifting through the detail and all aspects of the issue as they do on equally emotive news stories like SIDS research?

There's a whole social theory (cognitive bias) that is epitomised by how the threat of Climate change is so hard for folk to get to grips with; has to do with lack of immediate threat and it being outside past social experience, basically. MN only reflects the rest of the society we live in.

I asked what I thought was a serious question and It's a question I don't have an answer to. There may be something in HolidayCriminal's comment about cognitive bias but I'm not entirely convinced. Climate change is very easy to get to grips with. The physics is very simple. Add greenhouse gasses by burning fossil carbon and the planet gets warmer. That's about as certain as night follows day. We have set a course for a much warmer world and unless we change course pretty damn quick our grandchildren's lives will probably be nasty, brutish and short. It's our fault and we need to do something about it right now to avoid the worst.

Between now and December 2015 when the 21st Conference of the Parties meets in Paris, our politicians need to know they will be out of a job if they do not deliver a binding global agreement on massive and rapid carbon reduction.

Why is the survival of our children and grandchildren not the top topic of conversation on MN?

Because not everyone on MN believes in Global Warming. Not everyone on MN agrees or bothers to listen to overly emotional statements about dying children and grandchildren. Not everyone on MN has children. Not everyone on MN will ever have children or grandchildren. Not everyone on MN is female. Not everyone on MN likes patronising statements.

Will that do you?

IF you'd posted about the need for better awareness and action re global warming (and of course you'd be right) the reception would have been quite different. As it is you appear as some random (bloke?) off the internet wanting to hold this site's members to your personal account for the issue which you prize dearly.

PR tip. Repost another thread without the disappointments and 'threats' shot through it. Climate change IS discussed here on ocassion, but you wouldn't know that, would you?

Your post wasn't bad at all, I am asking the same thing. I've searched mn for talk of it and there is v little, mostly shot down by doubters.

Not sure if I believe in global warming. I believed in Swine flu and bird flu and scare stories that half the world's population would be wiped out. It didn't happen. It's a scare story. And really how on earth would it help if Mnetters talked about it. I don't think global warming is entirely man made

A few years ago they were talking about a mini ice age. I wish they'd make up their minds. That's the reason people don't take it seriously. It's an unproven theory.

I think there is no doubt that the global temperature is rising. However, the planet will be fine. It will be different but fine. Humans may well become extinct here on Earth but unless we exist on more than one planet that is likely anyway.

I think global warming is only part of it. Whether we're causing it or not it's probably too late to do anything about climate change. And individual impact is very small so it's easy not to bother.

I think more worrying is that we have used most of the fossil fuels that have built up over millions of years over the last 100 or so years. At the moment if they are used up, there will not be enough food, there will not be clean water. Farming and water supplies take a huge amount of fossil fuel to run. I think the uk should keep hold of what gas and oil it has and eek it out as long as possible. But no one would vote for that because we'd be poorer now. We are very lucky to live in a rich country now but I think within the next 3 decades we'll see big changes.

It's a bit like the financial crisis. It was obvious there was irresponsible lending but no one wanted to burst the bubble. When the fossil fuel bubble eventually bursts it will be a lot more painful.

But for now I'm enjoying my nice big warm house, car, multiple TVs and iPads. I pay extra for renewable electricity which makes me feel less guilty but apart from that I'm with the herd. I find thinking about it too much makes you miserable and what's the point in that

I haven't seen much on MN about it but then I don't often look at the In the News board. I sometimes steer clear of weightier topics given my level of fatigue when I am browsing the site.
It surprises me that there are many people who don't believe in anthropogenic climate change given the mass of evidence, measurements of ice at the poles, expert opinions from likes of the Royal Society, etc.
But it is perhaps quite intangible and often seems like life is just going on as normal.

I don't think it is intangible when you look at the extremes of weather we've been having all around the world. But perhaps the extremes are becoming normal in people's minds?

We're not short of fossil fuels. There are loads and loads left. You have to understand conspiracy theories to understand why we are being sold lies.

There is no shortage of fossil fuels and man-made climate change is a scam pulled by the elite and campaigned for by dupes who are unwittingly being used by the elite.

Greenpeace protests aimed to stop oil exploration in the Arctic. There are all sorts of other protests and campaigns aginst fossil fuel extraction using man-made climate change as the justification. But you have to understand what is really behind the drive for a post-industrial low-growth society wished for by the elite and campaigned for by the dupes.

There are huge amounts of fossil fuels in the Arctic, and some billionaires don't want the Russians to get it.

We have been sold a lie by our puppets and their masters for a few decades now. But the time of lies is over. We have new political parties that don't play the game, that aren't in the Club and that tell the truth e.g. UKIP and other populist parties that are not part of the Establishment. Also, now that Russia has been isolated from the West, expect Russia to no longer play the game and follow the rules of the Club and finally start telling the truth too. There are cracks in the man-made climate change con, so don't worry that fuel is running out or that the planet will be destroyed.

UKIP will scrap the Climate Change Act. They won't make it into power yet, but it is inevitable that UKIP and other populist parties all over Europe will eventually gain more and more power, as more and more of the public wake up to the lies we have been told and begin to demand change. Then the whole house of cards and the whole scam will collapse.

It is simple really. It was what LtEveDallas said. They don't believe it is real or true. And that is also why not many people vote for the Greens either. They don't believe it. They have to say they do in case they are called "flat-earthers" by important bigwigs like Gordon Brown, who also called Mrs Duffy a "bigoted woman" when she asked him a question. But the reality is that when it is time to vote, they don't believe it.

They have far more pressing concerns that they feel are real rather than imaginary.

It is harsh to hear and hard to understand that if you are a believer in climate catastrophe, just as some religious believers have trouble understanding why other peopke don't see things their way on religion too.

Partly it is not believed, partly because 2-4 degrees sounds v small when uk temperature varies between 30 and minus 10 and partly because there have been many scares over the years which come to nothing - Y2K anyone

stargirl thanks for pointing that out - phew, we're-all-going-to-die but the planet will survive. That's reassuring.

I am happy for people not to believe in climate change. I understand it is contested - there is a lot of debate and a lot of uncertainty if you drill down into it.

I'm not hostile to diversity of opinion, and claig your posts are interesting.

But where are the people who do believe? For those of us that do there is a lot to talk about.

My belief is we can deal with climate change or at least avert human extinction, through technology and renewables and adaptation. But it won't be easy. But it's kind of fun in a way, like war is fun, brings us all together. And there are lots of little bits of good news like the US has done a lot on renewables and the UN is making some positive moves to broker international agreement.

I would like to see more talk of global warming and environmental issues everywhere.

The thing is that I find debate difficult because of the use of over intellectualised vocabulary, which, to be frank, I don't understand.

I am clever enough to see what's in front of my face though.But I'm more of an 'action' woman.

Basically I think it's a case of 'A little less conversation, a little more action'

When people finally wake up and realise its too late, I want to be able to say that I did something, rather than sat on an internet forum talking about doing something....

There has been plenty of discussion of Climate change. Perhaps you are searching for the wrong term?

I think it is reassuring. Human beings aren't as important as they think they are. We are just one species.
