what do they earn, what do they do, how do they spend their money..the squeezed middle......middle of what?

This whole economic recession is different to any we have had over the past 80 odd years, as it started with a FINANCIAL recession; where instead of interest rates being driven HIGHER by the Bank of England to try and choke off double digit inflation/consumer demand, we had (by multi decades standards) low inflation and interest rates coming into the end 2007 financial crash - then the BoE bringing down the Base Rate to 0.50% BEFORE the government and consumer debt ridden economic recession took hold.

So in ANY recession, earnings on average fall to prices, but THIS time the ultra low interest rates have affected savings/income, AND people/businesses are cautious as they are expecting interest rates to RISE significantly, NOT fall, as before.

Governments CAN help the people’s take home pay with tax cuts, as several countries did significantly in 2008/9 e.g. the U.S., but as the UK was already ANNUALLY spending too much via a £158 billion deficit, widespread tax cuts were not possible - £2k off a new car and small VAT cut for a year or so, was.
