very eloquently put. Exactly how I feel about the whole debacle.

November 11th should be for those who selflessly gave their lives in the World Wars, not those who chose to fight dubious campaigns abroad.

Also I see no criticism at all for the invaders. No suggestion that they be diplomatic. This is a theme I've encountered before.

IamInvisible · 02/11/2013 14:29

Kim I wasn't addressing you, sorry if it appeared I was being rude. I was addressing Gecko's "that rock" and "oil" theory!

Geckos48 · 02/11/2013 14:30

It is so sad Kim, this thread really has shown that.

Gecko in the election in the Faulklands at the beginning of this year over 1500 voted, and all but 3 voted to remain British. I'm not sure where you get 600 odd from? If you add under 18s who couldn't vote and the 150 odd who choose not to it ads up to a lot more than 600...

IamInvisible · 02/11/2013 14:32

Fucking hell! that is one of the most offensive things I have ever read on MN. Why the fuck should they leave their homes and fly 16 hours across the world?

Jesus Christ and you want to be a social worker! No way should you be any where near vulnerable people!

limitedperiodonly · 02/11/2013 14:32

The reason we fought for the Falkands is because they are British

Partly. Also because Britain didn't want to lose face, the islands may be useful for oil exploration and because Thatcher may have seen it as her only chance of avoiding defeat at the polls.

I now don't disagree with taking back the islands; though I did then. I still believe that if we'd have defended them properly we'd have saved a lot of blood and money. And I am rueful that victory in 1982 meant Thatcher stayed in office until 1990 and the Conservative government until 1997.

But if the Government at the time wanted to offload them, the islanders' views would not have cut any ice.

BackOnlyBriefly · 02/11/2013 14:33

Tell that to those forriners on the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Sheppey and so on.

A quick Google search shows the population of the Faulklands to be almost 3000. So about 5x what you thought it was. But don't let facts get in the way of your arguments, you haven't so far.

IamInvisible · 02/11/2013 14:35

The population of the Falkands in 2012 was 2,932

clam · 02/11/2013 14:35

The British first settle on The Falklands in the 1830s, long before oil was discovered - anywhere, let alone there. I think it more likely that is the Argentinians who had their eye on likely oil reserves in 1982.

And I wasn't aware that anyone was "pumping oil out of the rock" Hmm yet at all.

I'd love to know what the Falklanders would make of gecko's suggestion that they all up sticks, leave their homes and come and live here.

Geckos48 · 02/11/2013 14:35

Oh get a grip Iam it is possible for people with a different view to you to be a social worker. Honestly change the record. Its irrelevant, strangely my career plans haven't changed because of bloody Mumsnet.

It is a bit of a cop out to my conundrums just to say 'well WW2 was different ' , it also ignored the last one about my mother in her reserved occupation since you insist on thinking we only remember dead soldiers.

SatinSandals · 02/11/2013 14:38

I would still like to know why all the disparaging remarks about Romans?

Geckos48 · 02/11/2013 14:38

I dont really understand your last post satin you will have to elaborate. And perhaps answer the question I posed you.

IamInvisible · 02/11/2013 14:39

You haven't got a different point of view Geckos, you are offensive. I was going to report your post but I decided not too, because I wan other people to see you for what you are.

You can keep changing your name but you'll always out yourself, because there really isn't that many offensive posters on here spouting the same thing over and over again!

limitedperiodonly · 02/11/2013 14:39

I'd love to know what the Falklanders would make of gecko's suggestion that they all up sticks, leave their homes and come and live here.

we did exactly that when it suited us

BackOnlyBriefly · 02/11/2013 14:40

Yeah the oil as the original cause for the colony is just something they copied from a conspiracy site I expect and didn't read all the way down.

There is plenty of criticism for Argentina. kim147, I meant from you and gecko. You have it all worked out that it was our fault. I thought gecko at least disapproved of wars, but clearly only if it's us fighting.

I get the whole disarmament thing now and why gecko can't be specific. The plan is just to disarm us.

Geckos48 · 02/11/2013 14:40

How have I been offensive?

I am anti-war

I believe in peace.

You need to ask yourself why this is offensive to you. It isn't to most people.

I agree with Iam, a different point of view is not an issue, but an offensive point of view that shows a compete lack of empathy is.
