Hope I haven't missed an existing thread on this (I did check). Just seen on twitter that the blonde girl from Ireland, removed from her Roma parents. DNA tests have proved she was their daughter. How horrific Sad

Yeah. Suing is always the answer.

Do you think they had her at home, thought they'd get in trouble for that, so panicked and lied about her place of birth?

Still just think poor, poor kid

The guards had a statutory duty to follow it up and be cautious when the paperwork didn't tally. The question is who gave the story to the papers - it should have not been publishable until after the results.

finallydelurking · 23/10/2013 20:30

Xpost, so there was a record of the birth? Just gets worse Sad

You are kidding me - the hospital did have the info? For goodness sake, what was the discrepancy? Face palm. Hopefully, lessons will be learned.

Apparently a journalist on a TV3 investigative program got a tip off via email. Passed it on to the Gardaí and in they went. They weren't happy with the birth certificate and removed the child. The journalist was giving plenty of vox pop but has all gone quiet. Last line in article about how family can probably bring a civil claim.

Not to mind what it will do to already not very good race relations in Ireland.

I regularly get asked if dd2 is mine!!! Better have her papers in order should a knock come to the door.

Joe Duffy will be on fire tomorrow...

almondfinger · 23/10/2013 21:25

ps for those of you who don't know, Joe Duffy is Ireland's Jeremy Vine, but way, way more annoying.

HumphreyCobbler · 23/10/2013 21:26

that poor family

Mattissy · 23/10/2013 22:12

I'm so so happy the child turned out to be there's, hopefully it'll nip any silly mass hysteria in the bud.

Zoway · 24/10/2013 13:07

yes, people will think twice and hopefully three times before reporting.

However, the way that that first tip came in to a journalist, not even to the gardai, it makes it look like somebody wanted a juicy story. If you have real concerns about a child's safety, who do you contact first? TV3 Confused

Clawdius · 24/10/2013 22:22

The father of the little boy was on the radio this morning and said he was an albino. I don't know if there is a confidentiality thing, but this could have been established by contacting the family gp The father has very good english so I would be surprised if didn't he explain this to the police.

And in the Greek case, it has turned out that the story of how they got the child is true and Maria, the little blonde angel, is definitely at least half-Roma. There is another link from the Guardian with a photo of the mother on the other thread.

They are looking for Maddy Mccann and taking anyone who looks out of place.

Zoway · 25/10/2013 21:38

That child is not an albino! he is very fair. He looks typically Irish. Fair as a child, with blue eyes but not quite truly blonde. I know a family with two albino 'children', they would be in their forties now. But that boy is not an albino. Maybe our use of the word albino comes from another language where it just means 'fair'. ??? Albino children are quite distinctive looking in other ways besides just being without pigmentation.

Horrible. Poor girl, I hope she's not too traumatised. Poor family, ditto.

Why on earth couldn't they do the DNA test BEFORE snatching her away from her family? Fuck sake.

I know. It's racism, isn't it. There's no other explanation.

Not just racism, but raging ignorance as well. Roma come in all colours - my gran was full-blood, with ginger hair & green eyes, same as her mum.
