Employers will be totally swamped by job applications

If this is accurate then would be employers who already have to sift through masses of applications many of which are already "insincere" to keep certain jobcentre clients on the right side of the benefit cheque will now have to deal with a positive tsunami of these pointless efforts. It's a shame because the genuinely unemployed work seeker can get lost in this sea of nonsense. The cost to the employers will be massive.

The operative phrase is that this only applies to 'selected individuals'. Likely to be a special measure for the persistently jobless, therefore, and not a blanket requirement. No 'tsunami'.

Oh yeah, Cogito, because the government always acts sensibly and proportionately, doesn't it? Gosh, they would never dream of, ooh, I dunno, stripping all legal aid from victims of domestic violence. Or making disabled people homeless because their adapted home is suddenly deemed to have too many bedrooms. Or telling terminally ill people they aren't disabled enough to claim disability benefits, and have to go on JSA and start looking for a job. Or telling a man with one leg he's only pretending to be disabled.

Of course not, we can trust them to do the right thing...

It's not a question of trust. Practically speaking, job centres simply wouldn't be able to give that kind of intensive attention to every single job-seeker.

I recently had the pleasure of shortlisting 520 applicants for 30 HCA jobs. It was quite apparent that a high volume of the applicants (approx 90-100) were applying solely because they had to apply for 'any' job as a tick box exercise.

I found it extremely cumbersome and frustrating.

What pissed me off the most was the appalling spelling and grammar (not through their fault)- I really think that more effort should be put into helping candidates become appointable for jobs- helping with maths and english etc. I couldn't shortlist any of them as they did not have relevant experience or qualifications (as clearly defined in the job Spec)- yet the Jobcentre were clearly encouraging them to apply for 'anything'. What a waste of their time.
