I wonder what has happened to her now. It's so sad. I hope she isn't being treated like a benefit scrounger with no prospects. She's obviously not going to be able to get financial support from the sperm donor.

Unbelievable. If nothing else this story illustrates perfectly why home educating parents should not be paranoid and defensive about the authorities wanting to carry out checks on the progress and wellbeing of their children, and they should embrace transparency and be co-operative for the sake of children like this one.

While I am sure it's only a tiny minority there are undoubtedly people who choose to HE as a way of isolating their children from the rest of the world in order that their own very disturbing regimes can be imposed and systematic abuse can go undetected.

I have read similar things before and it always comes back to 'no-one knew anything untoward was happening because the family were socially isolated and the kids were HE'ed so no-one else got close.'

Wow. I work in adoption and am always a bit shocked at the international adoption process and how easily it is for the family to isolate.
Years ago (not in adoption) I had a sad case where a 12 yr old became pg. they took her baby and she went into care.
At 18 now with lots of issues (obviously) she is indeed treated like a benefit scrounger.
I haven't the vocabulary to express my anger at our system.

I thought that too. The last government was going to introduce more stringent checks on home educators, in order to catch people who were abusing the system, but the legislation was thrown out by this government. It is pretty frightening to think that a parent can keep a child out of school for a reason such as this without anyone carrying out checks to make sure they're OK.

Horrific. Absolutely astonishing - who could even think of such a thing? I do hope the poor girl is getting help and support to try to come to terms with what happened.

I also totally agree about more checks being needed to avoid abuses of home education. There were a lot of people from children's charities and the like who were in support of the proposed measures. I have seen HE used as a cover for dubious childcare practices and there was nothing thy could be done about it. Very unfair for the children involved.

She'll be out in five years, I wonder if she will be allowed to contact her daughter and the baby.
