Hilary Mantel makes a good point

She shouldn't have said it, since it's bitchy and uncalled for (and I actually find HM rather odd, if I'm honest), but after a good couple of years in the media spotlight I struggle to think of one thing the Duchess of Cambridge thinks or believes in. She never gives an opinion, she barely speaks, she just looks pretty and smiles.

Millydad, but this is nothing to do with you or your status as a 'new dad'. You really aren't the flag-waver for dads. And where on earth do you get the right to call HM a dinosaur? She is a sharp, articulate, contemporary observer of power and customs.
No-one is trolling here. Just a good, healthy exchange of views. Trolls live elsewhere.

Abra1d · 19/02/2013 20:08

She lives off the money that comes from Prince Charles, ie, the Duchy of Cornwall and her husband's RAF salary. So unless you are a farmer in the West Country you probably don't contribute to her.

I agree that it's hard to see what exactly she did before she became engaged, but we the public weren't supporting her then so {shrug}.

What is wrong with St Andrew's (or is it punctuated without the apostrophe?)? I don't know anyone who went there but it always seems to rank well in various tables. I thought it was good?

scottishmummy · 19/02/2013 20:09

Unlike you millyad,I understand the point ms mantel was articulately making
Maybe read it slowly when you're not gibbering about your pg partner, race, and media whores

Millyad · 19/02/2013 20:09

I'm not going mad at all but it seems people are so quick to judge the girl, I take it all you have met her including HM and devised this opinion after your afternoon tea with her......

Oh and the media always get it right huh!!!

squoosh · 19/02/2013 20:10

Millyad maybe, oh I don't know, you could try READING the article. Not sure how you equate Mantel's views with a racial attack on a footballer. But I'm sure there's some great logic going on there. Keep up the good work!

pofacedplot · 19/02/2013 20:10

Yup. Read the actual essay please Millyad.

Pan · 19/02/2013 20:11

"Over educated under common sensed " oh Millydad, you are struggling aren't you?

TheOriginalLadyFT · 19/02/2013 20:11

No, the media don't always get it right

Which was what Mantel was saying Hmm

Have you read the article yet?

pofacedplot · 19/02/2013 20:12

You cannot possibly deduce from her writings that she is lacking in 'emotion'. Sentimentality, yes.

scottishmummy · 19/02/2013 20:13

And being a new dad doesn't give you special dibs to opine erroneously
No one can legitimately start sentence with as father, as mother and expect to be taken seriously

TheOriginalLadyFT · 19/02/2013 20:14

There is plenty of time for her to make political statements

Don't hold your breath waiting for that funnyperson - the Royals are not allowed to make political statements, one of the reasons everything they say can sound so bland

Pan · 19/02/2013 20:15

As a father....Grin....it wasn't your best gambit Millysdad, tbh.

Millyad · 19/02/2013 20:15

The same place where HM gets her right to comment on KM

I don't want to be the flag waver for dads either, it just drives me mad when someone is not asking for someone to pass judgement on them and it gets done, we've all been there...

funnyperson · 19/02/2013 20:15

Well I am beginning to think emotion, pofaced. I thought that with Wolf Hall when I read it- all that stuff described in such graphic detail with no emotion, and this article makes me think it again. Gripping and fascinating nevertheless, of course.

seeker · 19/02/2013 20:15

And she's not a "girl"! She's 30 ffs!

LapsedPacifist · 19/02/2013 20:16

It's called discourse and analysis Millyad, not 'passing judgement'.

Please read the article, honestly, you might learn something. You might even agree with it!

funnyperson · 19/02/2013 20:17

Marie Antoinette would logically be Camilla who seems to have got away with it.

squoosh · 19/02/2013 20:17

Anyway, Kate Middleton was never a 'girl', a 'gel' surely Wink

scottishmummy · 19/02/2013 20:18

People lasso inion all time,in fact your online opining.can you see that
Ms mantel didn't personally approach you and seek your opinion she's media whore
You're spontaneously offers opinion based on your erroneous understanding of mantel comments

funnyperson · 19/02/2013 20:18

No reason why Kate shouldn't break the mould and be political like Di with her landmines

Abra1d · 19/02/2013 20:19

'People lasso inion'

Lasso onions?

funnyperson · 19/02/2013 20:19

Definitely a 'gel' ! Describes her perfectly.

seeker · 19/02/2013 20:21

Kate Middleton was never a "gel".

A fact that I bet the royal family will never quite let her forget.Grin

Abra1d · 19/02/2013 20:21

She's not from a posh enough family to be a 'gel'. Which is no bad thing, I think.

scottishmummy · 19/02/2013 20:21

Dreadful iPad correction.ok,meant to say people pass opinion all time
Millyad do read mantel carefully, you're so wide of mark
