language of this article making me froth with rage

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-18152002

I am highly irritated by the language of this article. The guy got killed, which was wrong, sure, but a 13 year old girl should not be described as a 21-year old's girlfriend. naked pictures of a 13 year old girl is CHILD PORNOGRAPHY! This was not a relationship, this was grooming a child. The Walthamstow Guardian article linked described him as her "lover", which was even worse!

If I was this girl's mum, I would have been tempted to do the same, but would have called the police instead.

In fact, I would probably have to fight hard the instinct to castrate the bastard.

my god. A man convinces a child to have sex with him, takes pictures of her in a state of undress, leaves threatening messages for her (I realise that last one is legally 'allegedly' territory) but if that is accurate it would be very frightening and is given 'boyfriend' status by the press. It's a sick world we live in.

I am in no way saying that it was right to kill him, but a 21 yr old man is not the 'boyfriend' of a 13 yr old child.

I have worked with young girls (in my case vulnerable young girls who have been in care) and I have seen the way that older men sniff around them and convince them they're their 'boyfriend' and have sex with them. I have NEVER given them boyfriend status. They are just the dirty 30something trying to take advantage of a child.

I am going to lodge a complaint about this. The BBC website have been quite responsive on this before.

FeministPixie · 22/05/2012 12:31

I feel a spot of twitter rage a-coming...

Complain about it here:

I have linked the article with the hashtag #abusernotboyfriend on my Twitter account. @pixiepickle23

Thanks, Treefumaster, I have also complained.

Good lord! After the recent grooming ring convictions, I wonder if we should have just handed them over to this mum?

PrematurelyAirconditioned · 22/05/2012 13:48

Bloody hell. I saw the headline, thought "Goodness, that's really unusual" and didn't read the story.
Surely Mother kills daughter's rapist is a better and more accurate headline,

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/05/2012 13:54

Yanbu

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 22/05/2012 13:59

I saw him described as this girl's boyfriend on a different site and was very Hmm Angry He preyed on this girl, she was a victim, not a girlfriend.

And I don't doubt for one milisecond if I was her other I'd have wanted to do the same thing to him too. Dirty, vile bastard.

PrematurelyAirconditioned · 22/05/2012 14:04

What's the betting that they'd have framed it differently if the mum and daughter were white?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/05/2012 14:04

I have complained too. Hopefully they will change it.

LuckyLuckyMe · 22/05/2012 14:14

I have just complained. Thanks for the link Treef

I can't believe that he would be described as anything other than an abuser and rapist.

ScrambledSmegs · 22/05/2012 15:08

Thanks for the link Treef. I've complained too.

Describing that man as her boyfriend to me implies they (BBC) are legitimising an abuser/victim relationship, in effect condoning it Angry

I doubt the writer of the story thought it through at all, half the time the writers are trying to fulfil their massively overburdened deadlines and don't even think about what they're copying verbatim from the main news sources in the country. It doesn't make it any better, but it does explain the sheer stupidity.

www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/crime/mother-killed-her-13yearold-daughters-lover-then-blamed-her-7778261.html

This different article said that the mum's BF found topless pics of her online!

Its a strange case as he's a paedophile and he should of answered for his crimes and the description of him as her boyfriend is ridiculous journalism. Although by focussing on the reporting you do neglect the fact that this was a murder and that there is no place for vigilante justice and his murderers should also answer for their crimes.

FeministPixie · 24/05/2012 11:30

Uh, myself and other posters did not advocate any vigilante action. Nor would I use physical force in a similar situation.
