Print it out though and remove the bit about the Samaritans first megg, as that totally gives it away once you think about it. As dp said "so where are they meant to draft these 600 volunteers in from, do they just pick people off the street?"

harpsichordcarrier · 18/02/2006 16:52

that is funny and I do like the bit about being a buddy holly impersonator
BUT
I love his lyrics
there it is
he's a poet
and I think this horrible decline is unbearably sad to watch

FrannyandZooey · 18/02/2006 19:23

Yes but the thing about him is that he is not celebrated for his art but for his self-destructive lifestyle. Nobody would have heard of him if he didn't take drugs, get arrested, have fights, self-harm and shag a similarly self-destructive clothes horse.

Bloody depressing I think.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/02/2006 00:15

I don;t know if that's true franny
I appreciate that his current noteriety is to do with the company he keeps and the drug habit, but the Libertines were a well known and respected band long before Pete met Kate.
long long before

FrannyandZooey · 19/02/2006 07:46

Well I think it is true. Dp is a bit of a muso, and was excited by the Libertines too, so I have been subjected to the whole sorry tale from the beginning . My main reaction was, and is, how sad to lionise someone so bent on messy and public self-destruction. The stories about them in the press were always all about the drugs and the fights and the scandal, long before Kate came along. If he wants to p*ss his talent up a wall, fine, however don't expect me to stand around saying how sad it all is, or, worse, how marvellously glamorous.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/02/2006 10:45

hey I don't say it's glamorous franny, don't get me wrong
I have surprisingly little tolerance for the drug users and abusers
and the drunks and the self harmers and the self destructers come to that
slef indulgent and weak is my usual assessment
I don't read much of the press about him actually, but I don't think in any event that the lionisation or the wilfull pissing away of talent can detract from the essential genius of his lyric writing

noddyholder · 19/02/2006 10:47

I think he is very talented lyrically but his personal life is a mess which is not exactly an unusual situation
