I have noticed trend when there is inter racial violence in the media of calls for vigilante style justice without due process (though it seems one sided at times)
I think this is a case in point of how facts can be unclear, the media deliberately fabricate falsehoods or selectively edit audio tapes cherry pick photos to suit a particular narrative and the seemingly self flagellating cognitive dissonance of some mumsnetters.

There are always two sides to a story, conclusions should not be reached and worked back from and the cold logic of due process in an impartial justice system in an important safeguard against the tyranny of the majority and cherry coke and making is nommy moms.

That should be Malibu.

I will be accepting apologies in the form of ocado vouchers and pre paid gas cards.

You may now resume your regularly scheduled unreasonableness :p

Could you write that in English, and tick the "convert links automatically" box, please.

Just so we know who is being unreasonable.

Luckily the man charged with Trayvon Martin's murder is going to enjoy all the benefits of what we hope is an impartial & reasonable (US) justice system where all the sides to the story will presumably be examined. A privilege that was not afforded to the prejudged Trayvon Martin himself. You sound like you know a lot about 'self-flagellating cognitive dissonance'.... can we recommend you put a dab of TCP on your wounds?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 17/05/2012 07:21

BTW... even if the dead young man had broken skin on his knuckles consistent with a fight, and even if it is shown that there had been a brawl, UK laws of self-defence at least would say that pulling a gun on an unarmed man and shooting him dead does not constitute 'reasonable force'.

edam · 18/05/2012 14:09

The cops aren't saying anything, even the killers's legal team aren't saying anything, all we've got is a rumour via a TV station who have some guy they know what it might mean. And did you miss this bit? "It could be consistent with Trayvon either trying to get away or defend himself,? Sheaffer said. Even if these injuries do exist, they don't prove anything either way!

What we DO know is that an unarmed kid was shot dead.

mayorquimby · 18/05/2012 15:16

"UK laws of self-defence at least would say that pulling a gun on an unarmed man and shooting him dead does not constitute 'reasonable force'."

Not strictly true. The fact that guns are illegal in the UK means it's going to put a lot higher treshold on it, but if it were legal to carry a gun in the UK there are many scenarios where shooting an unarmed person could be deemed reasonable force and constitute self-defence.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 18/05/2012 15:54

Tony Martin found it wasn't a acceptabe defence, even with a legally held gun. Maybe a little old lady faced with a 6' knife-wielding mugger could pull out a pistol and plead that it evened the odds, but two adult males, one with a gun, one without?

mayorquimby · 18/05/2012 16:06

tony martin shot at intruders who were fleeing as far as I remember who no longer posed any threat to him.
If an adult male was being attacked by another adult male and the attacker had gotten the upper hand to the extent that he was on top of his victim and beating him in a manner that lead the victim to fear for his life then there's a good chance that they'd be deemed to be using reasonable force if they shot them.
If Tony Martin was being attacked by the intruders rather than shooting into the dark at them when they were leaving the property I'd have fancied his charges on having his plea of self-defence accepted.

But there's no evidence that Trayvon Martin did anything other than go to the shop. I think it's quite distasteful to speculate about people being on top of each other and beating each other on a thread about a poor lad who was shot dead, when the only facts we know for sure are a. that he was unarmed and b. that he is dead. Poor boy.

Having said that, the latest tranche of evidence apparently includes police records showing that the killer made repeated calls about black male teenagers - never bothered to report anyone else on the street, just black youths.

mayorquimby · 20/05/2012 14:21

my example was not to do with Trayvon Martin as I have no idea what occured there. It was in relation to the assertion that "UK laws of self-defence at least would say that pulling a gun on an unarmed man and shooting him dead does not constitute 'reasonable force" and nothing else.

URallchickenlentil · 20/05/2012 15:20

No exam.no.

There is evidence suggesting he did more than go to the shops.

Martin did not only phone about black kids.
