Catholic church - yet more evidence of endemic child abuse by those in power

the most senior cleric in Ireland has been lying about what he knew about child abuse for 40 years So last year's report where he pretended he was shocked and saddened and it would never happen again was clearly a load of PR rubbish, then.

It's beyond sickening. How many other cases, how many other examples of wrong-doing by people who are still in charge today are we yet to hear about?

The programme on BBC that broke the story is repeated tonight at 9 on BBC"

It's all over the radio all day over here, very distressing and divisive

Hi irishtwit. A reporter on the Beeb said the Church was in trouble in Ireland because the Grannies have got angry - and they are the mainstay of the Church, the people who actually turn up week in week out and contribute to the collection (much like my own Gran). Do you think that's true, or do you think the Cardinal and the hierarchy will get away with it, again?

It's been going on so long there's "abuse fatigue", coupled with austerity, referendum so I think they'll get away with it.....I'm not Catholic, so somewhat cynical about it.... the worst thing is that there are some very good priests, oh and apparently the Vatican is gagging celebrity priests....the grannies are loyal to the local church and priest if not the hierarchy, so still go to mass, but they are financially in a mess and owe the government millions for the previous abuse cases..... even if the grannies get angry Cardinal Brady is so arrogant he won't resign, I actually wonder if the Vatican won't let him, because in a sense it opens the doors even more if he does.....

I just watched this. Wow! I am thoroughly disgusted, but what I really can't understand is why the justice system does not go after these priests (the cardinal) who not only hid a crime, but allowed it to continue.
Surely if you covered up a robbery or murder you would be done for it. Personally I wouldn't look to the Catholic church to make the guy resign, they've proven again and again they only have the institutions interests at heart, the Irish courts should be going after these men just as they did the actual abusers. Especially when the Cardinals own notes condemn him.

quite, whatmess.

One of my mother's friends is an RC priest - not a parish priest, an academic. He came very close to walking out (moving over to the CofE) over the abuse scandals. He has only been a priest for about a decade - came to the priesthood late in life so I'm sure he has not been involved in abuse or cover-ups, as far as you can be sure of any RC priest. I lost a lot of respect for him when he decided to stay, sadly. And it's horrible to have to qualify what I say about him being innocent just because the Church he belongs to is so riddled with corruption and vice.

I'm really upset by this. I also completely believed Daly. He is a disgrace. Not telling the children's parents, not informing the police.

Cardinal Daly should resign and spend his remaining years in reflection asking forgiveness for what his silence meant to many children. He and his actions are shaming our church

Animation · 04/05/2012 21:52

Who do these men think they are!!!

That they are above the law when children get abused?

He should GO!!!

LynetteScavo · 04/05/2012 22:00

"Cardinal Daly should resign and spend his remaining years in reflection asking forgiveness for what his silence meant to many children."

Indeed.

OliviaLMumsnet · 04/05/2012 22:23

Don't you mean Cardinal BRADY?

edam · 04/05/2012 22:32

The story I linked to is indeed about Cardinal BRADY, the primate of all Ireland.

(Cardinal Daly is dead, I believe, so will probably not be reaching for his lawyers any time soon.)
