Titanic tribute puppet urinates in street - is it disrespectful?

A puppet show in Liverpool called Sea Odyssey began today with a 30ft Little Girl Giant parading through the streets, in tribute to the people that lost their lives on the Titanic 100 years ago.

The storyline is based on May McMurray's letter to her father, a steward who was aboard the Titanic and tragically died when the ship hit an iceberg on 15th April 1912.

His body was never found and he never did read the letter from his daughter who lamented his absence back home in Kensington.

As the 30ft puppet passed through Kensington today, it stopped, squatted, and appeared to urinate in the street.

Is this massively disrespectful to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy?
Especially to the family of May McMurray, on who the "spectacular" is based?

Also, this performance cost £2 million. Should this money be spent on something more respectful than a puppet urinating in the street?

are you sure it urinates, really? that is very odd. I seen the puppet on the news today and it does look very impressive.

Lauren09 · 20/04/2012 13:51

It squatted in the middle of the street, and a huge hose appeared between its legs and sprayed out. It definitely appeared to be urinating.

festi · 20/04/2012 13:56

that is very odd

OneHandFlapping · 20/04/2012 13:56

Seeing as the Titanic sank 100 years ago, there can be barely anybody alive today who lost relatives on it. Surely the sensitivities have diminished somewhat?

Sounds odd though. Public urination is rather taboo.

Frontpaw · 20/04/2012 13:58

That is so weird. A peeing puppet! What does that have to do with the Titanic?

GladbagsAndYourHandrags · 20/04/2012 14:00

I saw it on the news today but they didn't mention it was connected to the Titanic. Or if they did I missed that bit. It looked very good, I would love to be close enough to go and see some of it.

The urination is odd - I suppose it is trying to be ART and edgy and push boundaries and all that. Maybe a potty training toddler will be next in line for Turner prize.

Shocked that this cost £2 million, who's paying for that?

It is tragic that so many people died on the Titanic but it was 100 years ago. I think their is far to much fake heartbreak over this. Nobody is alive today who was on the Titanic, I would be surprised if anyone alive today even knew or had ever met anyone who died on the Titanic.

I saw a local news report the other day about a couple who had an ancestor that had died on the Titanic and were on that Titanic reenactment cruise. After a big sigh the reported asked the couple "if being on the cruise had helped them and would they now be able to move on as a family?" I couldn't work out if he was taking the piss or not.

Someone from Liverpool council was asked about the cost on the news - they claim that (a) they didn't pay all the 2 million and (b) the city makes more than that back in tourism etc. Don't know whether this is true or how they work it out, but it does seem that entertainment is Liverpool's main industry these days.

We saw this giant puppet a few years ago when it came to London - it was pretty cool. Don't remember her weeing anywhere though!

festi · 20/04/2012 17:18

so it cost 2 million and was not even specialy commisioned by liverpool for this even. bejasssus that is even more shocking.

Growlithe · 20/04/2012 18:34

Can't believe anyone could be moaning about this. I haven't been today but can't wait to go tomorrow. My brother has been today and describes it as magical. Like the spider in 2008, it is the most amazing street theatre you could ever imagine and it is an honour to have it in Liverpool. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend this joyous event over the weekend.

AlistairSim · 20/04/2012 18:39

Maybe it's to give the watchers an idea of what it's like to be swept away on a wave of water?

Magneto · 20/04/2012 19:18

Apparently the majority of the cost was funded by local businesses. I'm hoping to get over to Liverpool tomorrow to watch some of it. From the clips I've seen on youtube the puppetry is amazing.

pdb · 21/04/2012 18:36

I'm planning on going to see this tomorrow, it looks amazing! I live nowhere near Liverpool but I think its worth the journey. What I am unable to find is any information regarding the schedule of events tomorrow, I mean what time do I need to turn up 10am, 2pm?? I have small children so I don't wish to be hanging around too long especially if the weather is bad. Can anyone help please?

MustControlFistOfDeath · 21/04/2012 18:40

She probably couldn't find a public convenience large enough Wink

Ponders · 21/04/2012 20:37

surely it's the dog?

Growlithe · 21/04/2012 21:00

pdb Sunday's route - this should give you some idea but today the timings were a bit off so I'd get to the spot you choose a bit early.

Jellykat · 21/04/2012 21:01

They look absolutely incredible, wish i could see them, but i'm too far away Sad

Think the weeing thing would make me chuckle, everyone pees why would it be offensive?

AnneTwacky · 21/04/2012 22:42

DD, DH and I went to see them today. They were absolutely fantastic.

If you can get to see them, it's definitely worth it.

HarrietSchulenberg · 21/04/2012 22:49

Agree with Ponders. The urinating puppet would be the dog, surely?

2shoes · 21/04/2012 22:50

oh I am so jealous, saw this on the news, my dd would have been amazed by the whole thing,

Growlithe · 21/04/2012 23:41

It was amazing. The teamwork involved to get each puppet to move was breathtaking. Also, when you saw the giants walking beside the familiar and new buildings of Liverpool, it gave you a fresh appreciation of the city. It was a fantastic event.

2shoes · 21/04/2012 23:46

Iam so green it must have been so well Amazing
