more than £11bn of the £1.9bn spending cuts come from women. Maybe since this one's from the Mail, all those right-wingers who scoffed at the last set of figures will finally accept it is a fact that this government is hitting women hardest.

This type of argument assumes there is some ideal point, at which fairness and equality is perfectly balanced and any move away from this is detrimental.

For one could make a parallel case about lack of equality when women disproportionately benefit from additional spending. But again to make that case convincingly you need the same ideal point.

What is that ideal point? And have we really ever been there?
