Shot for being a black boy in a white area - please read

Apologies if this has been posted - I couldn't find it.

Trayvon Martin was a 17yo boy who lived in a largely white, gated area. He left his home to pop to the shops and was spotted by a white neighbourhood watch member. George Zimmerman called the police to let them know about this boy who was "like he's up to no good or he's on drugs or something" before then saying "These assholes, they always get away.". He told the 911 operator that he was following Trayvon and was advised not to. Trayvon at that point had started running to get away from his follower.

Trayvon was not on drugs or acting suspiciously. He had bought a packet of skittles and a can of iced tea and was heading back home. He phoned a friend in a panic about being followed by Zimmerman, at that point the friend heard him say "why are you following me?" as Zimmerman cornered him to confront him, then there was a scuffle before the line went dead.

Zimmerman had ended up fighting with the 17yo. He had a gun, Trayvon had just his sweets and can of pop. Trayvon was heard by neighbours to shout for help before being blasted in the chest. He died on the spot, just yards from his own back door.

Zimmerman has not been arrested. He claimed he was acting in self defence. He has a history of raising false alarms to the police and broke neighbourhood watch rules by carrying a loaded gun. He is still free.

Trayvon's family and friends still have not come to terms with what has happened to their little boy who was not afraid to be seen kissing his dad in public and who once saved his dad's life by pulling him from the flames of a house fire.

Can you imagine if Trayvon had been white and Zimmerman black?

Please sign This petition to prosecute Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon. Please also share on your facebook walls. Cheers.

Absolutely disgusting. So he was in his car and feared for his life from someone, unarmed and on foot???

So pleased he's going to be charged

lambethlil · 21/03/2012 07:53

Bump.

Now at 740,000+

Extraordinary that it should take a petition.

Just to reiterate, Zimmerman has said he shot him, and his not been arrested.

I have signed it. What a dire place the USA can be at times Sad

TheRhubarb · 21/03/2012 10:31

Bumping again for those who haven't seen it.

The Self Defence Law under whose protection Zimmerman is currently enjoying his freedom was brought in by Jeb Bush. Basically if you say that you 'feared' for your life then you can escape prosecution even if the person you killed was unarmed.

This is what has happened since the law was brought in. "Five years after the law was signed by then Governor Jeb Bush ? who called it a "good, commonsense anti-crime" bill ? claims of justifiable homicides in Florida more than tripled, from just over 30 to more than 100 in 2010. In that time, the stand-your-ground defense was used in 93 cases involving 65 deaths ? and in the majority of those cases, it worked."

Please sign, bump and share because if Trayvon's death invokes a change in the law then his tragic death will not have been in vain and he may yet save the lives of other innocent people.

PigletJohn - why would I make it up? Although I realise it sounds crazy and unthinkable that anyone could shoot an unarmed and innocent boy and get off scott free, that is exactly what is happening here.

If you feel strongly about this, please sign the petition, share it on your facebook and get other people talking about this. Because it has to stop.

Don't think that you can't make a difference. By signing and sharing you are. Even by bumping this you are ensuring that other people get to see it and read it.

I read that after the shooting, the police took the boy's body to the morgue and made no attempt to find his nearest relative for 3 days. During that time the boy's family was looking for him unaware of the boy's fate. Family was notified of the incident via a photo of the dead boy with a stream of blood from his mouth. The level of inhumanity shown by the shooter, the police, and (to a lesser extent) some of the witnesses in this case is despicable.

TheRhubarb · 21/03/2012 16:06

The police thought he was probably a petty criminal who had no business to be in that area. They believed Zimmerman's account straight away, without question.

Witnesses heard Trayvan screaming just before he was shot - they dialled 911.

Zimmerman had been arrested before. Trayvan had never been in any trouble at all.

It's unbelieveable, shocking and heart-rending. Please show your support for his poor family.

Sounds like Zimmerman just wanted to shoot him for being black. And got away with it, because he can.

Report on Rally

We need to stop believing the media myth that young people in hoodies = obviously up to no good.

My DD's grandfather (72) wears a hoodie and he is definitely not about to break into anyone's home or mug them.

TheRhubarb · 22/03/2012 09:41

Rallies now in New York and being organised all over America.
Zimmerman has still not been arrested.

You can really understand how this could spill over into violence couldn't you? I hope to goodness it won't but I can imagine how frustrated and angry the public are at the lack of action from the police. What the law basically says is that you can shoot anyone and get away with it if you claim self defence. Trayvon was shot dead because he looked suspicious - he was screaming in pure fear. The man who did that is still walking free.

For goodness sake please sign the petition and please share this. We need to lend our support here.

I cannot believe he still hasn't been arrested.

Overspill into riots? Absolutely - remember Rodney King?

stinkyfluffycat · 22/03/2012 10:02

Signed.

NightLark · 22/03/2012 10:21

Dear god, I didn't believe it at first either. I mean you don't want to believe it do you? you think there must be some kind of explanation behind the scenes. But I don't think there is.

Signed and commented.

I am so, so glad we don't let all and sundry go armed here.

As someone else commented, 'Treyvon is all our sons'.

I didn't speak up, and then they came for me, and there was no-one left to speak.
