\link{http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2081259/Rajib-Karim-Whine-Bangladeshi-terrorist-jailed-plotting-blow-passenger-jet.html\as reported in DM}

Is it just normal crap DM reporting that makes it seem a thoroughly illogical decision? He is allowed to use the phone apparently, but it costs a lot, so if he is allowed to communicate at all (don't see why he should, mind, given why he's there, but that's a whole other issue Hmm) why can't it be by Skype?

Are prison authorities monitoring phone calls but can't monitor Skype? Or are they using the high cost of ordinary phone calls to prevent prisoners having much contact? Anybody know?

It may simply be that a high-security prison doesn't have the equipment available for convicts, and monitoring internet usage would be much harder than a simple phonecall.

Perhaps his friends and family could top up his phonecard more often? Or maybe he could work more, earn more, and call more.

How about tough shit, he shouldn't have put himself in prison ...

Offenders don't usually have access to the internet or online stuff, so Skype wouldn't be an option.

They do monitor phone calls to an extent yes, and it is limited to how many calls you can make, and who they can call. They buy phone cards. Introducing Skype as well would involve additional monitoring especially because of the additional equipment that would be needed.

As far as I am aware, and I coud be wrong, the prison service/government would have to pay a subscription rate for Skype as it is a "business" rather than a personal person. This guy should consider himself lucky he isn't in a Bangladeshi prison - cant imagine they would be quite so accommodating! Wish our prisons were more like them for certan offenders .....
