So is this the best list or can you come up with a better one?

Gabrielle Giffords, Adele, Eman al-Obeidi, Sarah Burton, Nafissatou Diallo, Jelena Lecic, Princess Charlene, Pauline Pearce, Rebecca Leighton, Duchess of Alba, Corporal Kelsey de Santis, Sweetie the panda.

and is it any less worthy than the men's list?

Mark Kennedy, Colin Firth, Sean Donnelly, Ronan Kerr, William McRaven, Rory McIlroy, Paul McMullan, Ashraf Haziq, Alan Graham, Adam Werritty, Gary Speed, Herman Cain

Well, I wasn't too bothered by the panda on the women's list until I saw there were no animals on the male list.

Insomnia11 · 30/12/2011 16:26

I will have to Google everyone in women's list except Adele! Of course this is no indication of whether they are worthy of inclusion.

I saw the list earlier and couldn't work it out but now assume it means "newsworthy" women (or men) rather than necessarily anyone who has actually done anything worthwhile. Jelena Lecic, for example, was some woman whose details were used on a fake blog or something....???? I can think of a lot better candidates for Women of the Year than that.

AlpinePony · 30/12/2011 17:00

Duchess of Alba? For what exactly? Services to young cock?

DressingGownSnowQueen · 30/12/2011 17:33

I have only heard of 4 of them Confused

Why is the panda on there? Why isn't the male panda a man of the year? Poor Mr. Panda.

joben · 30/12/2011 17:43

wasn't rebecca leighton the nurse accused of murdering patients, later released and since sacked after admitting stealing drugs? Wow what a role model! And I think Jesse J is way more deserving-at least her songs encourage girls to be 'who they are' stand up to bullies and not be so bothered about the consumerism! Adele only sings about being dumped!

junkcollector · 30/12/2011 17:50

Rubbish list. If it's a list of women in the headlines you'd have thought they could find a place for Rebekah Brooks. Plenty of more noteworthy women were in the news last year.

Seabright · 30/12/2011 17:51

Why isn't Christine Legarde on there? Super clever, talented in law and finance, multi-lingual and a large family. (and super-chic)

AlpinePony · 30/12/2011 17:55

Quite seabright. Angela and Christine running the bloody world between them.

It's faces of the year not Women/Men.
So just a few that made headlines, though a weird choice.
A strange mixture of sadness and silliness, and just doesn't look right.

HollyGhost · 30/12/2011 18:05

I have no idea what their criteria for making the list could be Xmas Confused

BarfAndHeave · 30/12/2011 18:25

Sweetie the Panda?

Are there really so few women of note that they have to include a sodding animal?

Fine - well I vote Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks as one of my Men of the Year then.

FrozenNorthPole · 30/12/2011 18:27

What about ...
Merkel?

The three female winners of the Nobel Peace Prize?
Chrissy Wellington?

That's a profoundly depressing list.
And almost all on that list there because of a man's actions. As I pointed out to DH, some of the men seem like an odd choice but at least almost all (apart from the farmer who kicked Rhianna out of his field) there out-with the actions of a woman.

blaaahh · 30/12/2011 18:35

It's women in the news for each month ( so like Adele was the main woman in the news for February )

joben · 30/12/2011 18:43

Lagarde and Merkel: Great shout

sofadweller · 30/12/2011 19:24

Definitely Lagarde and Merkel should be on any list.

How about Rebecca Adlington and/or Sarah Stevenson, taekwondo champion

two4one · 30/12/2011 19:42

No desire to applaud Merkel really (although she is obviously a good role model in many respects) but Christine Lagarde is a bloody brilliant suggestion - I love her, and her blonde bob.

two4one · 30/12/2011 19:43

Also, why no Kate Middleton? You can't say she hasn't done well for herself!

TheBolter · 30/12/2011 21:26

Yy, I too surprised at no Middleton. I suppose if it was about arses then 'the other one' would have got in.

LeBOF · 30/12/2011 21:31

I would have liked to see the granny who battered the jewellery robbers, and the Hackney woman who berated the rioters in that list. They were big news.

ReindeerBollocks · 30/12/2011 21:32

A big fat no to that list, I much prefer BOF's list personally.

ReindeerBollocks · 30/12/2011 21:33

Also, I don't think that things done as part of your chosen career should mean a nomination for such an accolade.

Things done over and above your career - then actually yes a nomination well deserved.

tribpot · 30/12/2011 21:37

I can only assume someone pulled out the first 12 stories they could find with a woman (or other female being) in it.

Anyway, why only animals? What about plants? Or rocks?
