Interesting article but this point illustrates to me the flawed logic of their argument:

"Why should there be one law for Travellers and another for us?" is a common complaint. Let me explain why.

There is one law. THE law. There is no variation for any ethnic race. To do so would be by very definition racist.

Can you imagine muslims claiming that they should be given special areas to live in? Or how about Jews who don't feel they should have to apply for planning permission for synagogues because they own the land and its part of their culture to worship there.

Basically, nothing I read in that article makes me think any differently and I am still confused over why travellers seem so hell bent on ensuring they don't travel.

The bottom line is that travellers still think they should be treated as a special case just because of who they are.

Nice guy - seems very logical and reasonable to me, though some people seem unsure about the law .....

Another posho getting involved in things that have nothing to do with her.

Isn't she a Traveller so doesn't it have quite a lot to do with her ?

I do have some sympathy with the people at Dale Farm because there are very, very few places for them to go. I would have a lot more sympathy if they were campaigning to have more sites opened so that they could, well, travel and live legally.

JLK2 - Kate Evans is a Traveller acksherly and though she doesn't live at Dale Farm, has had an eviction order served on the site where she is currently residing.

So I think it has quite a bit to do with her and as such the article was (IMO) an interesting read.

Thought-provoking and I'm sorry she's being evicted but... although I'm quite prepared to believe there is a need for more travellers' sites, I'm not convinced by the claims that they should be treated differently under the law. No-one else would have got permission to build on the half of Dale Farm that is subject to the eviction order.

According to the news, some of the people who have left Dale Farm have turned up a few miles down the road from me, in a local park. It's a country park, in an area of very high deprivation, an essential green lung and recreational space in a town full of poverty and cramped, over-crowded and substandard housing. I really hope the travellers aren't going to stay there.

Kate Evans wasn't born a traveller though, which kind of dispells the notion of them being an "ethnic group". She's a posho who went to public school.
