Premature Babies - Lung Injection given to the mothers

I don't know whether any of you on here received this injection or indeed have had premature babies.

But in the Metro on monday or tuesday I read and so did some of my friends that this injection has been proven to cause problems not in our childen but in their children, I'm talking behavioural and brain issues.

Did anyone read this or have found out if this is indeed true ?

Just to confirm why i am asking this, I had a prem baby at 29 weeks and was given this injection to help my unborn babies (dd) lungs to kick start and function before I had my cs.

Any comments would be apprieciated.

Cheers
Alicats

oh defo. I agree, andTBH, the injections are given to women in premature labour so they have the risk of their babies having CP anyway.

Alicats tbh I am not worrying, I had at least 2 or 3 doses of this, my baby was born at 27weeks and she is now 6 3/4 and fine.

So saying I also gave my kids MMR and everything else. I believe that maybe, possibly in a minute proportion of cases that this injection could perhaps cause long term issues, however it SAVES LIVES. So when I weigh up the odds, I am happy to do it. IYKWIM

I REALLY REALLY hate these sort of articles that are complete cr*p worrying people like this, when all the main evidence is different.

If I was given the choice and odds of 10% chance there could be a problem with this drug, but it will mean an 80% chance your DD will survive, against a 20% chance of survival without the drug, which am I going to choose? (BTW those odds are just made up, I have no idea what the survival rate is without the steriods for a 27 weeker)

I had 1 dose with Dd2 and she is perfectly healthy apart from Asthma.

I had the injection during premature labour with my first in Dec 2002. Although he was born alive, due to many many complications we let him go. It transpired though that had he lived he would have had severe CP (he had bleeding on the brain whilst inside me and afterwards).

I had one injection with my second but she was stillborn at 26 weeks in Aug 2003.

I had two injections with my DD who was born at 29 weeks in April 2004. She is thankfully fine and is a right little madam! She breathed on her own straight away and I know things would have been very differnt had she not have had the injections.

I had one injection at 27 weeks during my current pregnancy (am 36 weeks) and would have quite happily had another but was told that there is no added advantage by having more than one injection IYKWIM.

Thanks Alicats. I'm trying not to worry about this now, since there isn't anything I can do about it (had the drugs 5 years ago, and as everyone else has said I am just so grateful to have a healthy child who breathed on her own from birth). The stupid thing is that in my case I was given 8 or 9 weekly doses and they weren't really necessary as it turned out (though it wasn't obvious at the time that they wouldn't be, so I'm glad I had them...) because dd hung on in there till 36 weeks when they delivered her by c-section.

However, all things considered I'm still glad I had the drugs. I know that if she'd been born at 27 weeks they'd have made a huge difference.

Btw, she doesn't have cp or any obvious complications... unless living half her life in a fantasy world can be blamed on the drugs!
