Unbelievable. Fast-track to a more divided society through our children.

The whole point of 50% in higher ed as well as the purpose of EMA was to get the NEET stats down - or am I just horribly cynical?

Gooseberrybushes · 13/05/2011 19:28

No scary I completely agree.

I said earlier it was just forcing young people into huge debt for political benefit only.

SardineQueen · 13/05/2011 19:55

People on the thread seem to be assuming that if wealthy people were allowed to buy these additional places then they would still have to get the grades etc appropriate for the course.

Why do people think that?

Surely if they got the grades they would go there under the usual system like everybody else, for a tithe of the price.

The point of this, surely, is that wealthy parents will be able to buy places for their offspring who are not able enough to get in via the usual route.

Gooseberrybushes · 14/05/2011 15:01

well you can get the grades and not be accepted

it depends when you go for the place, in the initial application stage like the foreign places, or if you fail to get your offer grades

I don't know if the second is being suggested

apprenticemum · 15/05/2011 01:12

OK we know it goes on so why dont the wealthy students buy a place in the university of their choice BY PAYING THE FEES OF A CANDIDATE WHO WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD THAT UNIVERSITY as well as their own fees Call it "Tandem Tuition"

Tortington · 15/05/2011 01:19

cameron said this wasn't going to happen a couple of days ago.

anyway.

yes they will have to go and pass exams but universities of their choice may not be open to them if there arenlt enough places.

there was a guy on radio 2 who said something like as this would be counted and recorded in the same bracket as foreign students - there wouldn't be a true record of equality

madhattershouse · 15/05/2011 01:22

Money buys you choices!! FACT. Conservatives love this idea...give it credance by suggesting that it can fund the poorer but the real truth is "Money talks". Rich people have choices the rest of us have to WORK for it!!

LegoStuckinMyhoover · 15/05/2011 22:19

madhatterhouse, agree with that. However, 'working for it' still doesn't work in all too many examples.

RobF · 20/05/2011 19:32

The cost of paying outright (as foreign students do) is significantly more than £9000 a year.
