Dads to get six months paternity leave

Daily Mail going nuts about this today like it's the end of civilisation. I'm really excited about it, I think it's most progressive thing this governement has done in a long time. And reflects real world - ie both parents are pitching in. Does anyone think their dh/dp will take it up?

God no! DH had 2 weeks off after the birth of DS2 - and that was quite long enough - I wanted to get into a routine - which would have been a nightmare had he been at home for 6 months!

I think the idea is you do the first six months, then go back to work, and then he does the next six months.

I think it's a brilliant idea and so does my DP. He wanted to take more time off when our DS was born but couldn't afford it.

"Current rules entitle working mothers to six months' paid leave, followed by six months' unpaid time off.

The new bill would extend the paid period to nine months.

It would also allow fathers to take the second six months of leave instead of mothers, with the remaining three months' money - £106 a week - being transferred to them."

Only 3 months paid then? Or am I being thick?

I think it's a weak proposal. What we need is paternity leave at 90% of his salary. Whose going to stay home for £106 per week? Not my DH if I have any say in it.

Equality? HAve to disagree. Equality will be when men can leave work at 6 weeks of 90% of their pay. Mena are now entitled to 2 weeks and few of them take it. Why? Because they can instead take 2 weeksof holiday at 100% of pay.

Also, I think treatment in the workplace will only be equal when men start taking paternity leave that equal's womes' maternity leave.

Or gone up in the world since your last name, by any chance?

MarsLady · 21/10/2005 12:59

I'm so glad that this will no longer be an issue in our house (cos the factory is closed and there will - please God - be no more babies).

However, 6 months means diddly if there is no money coming in. I think that if they want to make it fair then they should enable men to take paternity with pay... I thought they were trying to get people to rely on their own income... how does stopping a man's pay help that?
