I could be away from my family for a few weeks and they wouldn't notice, and we live 60 miles away- not that far, but when they don't drive might as well be the ends of the Earth.

I have taught my kids what to do though, this has always been a fear of mine.

I knew I shouldn't have clicked through, tears in eyes. He played with his Thomas and went to his potty - what a good little boy.

melissasmummy · 20/10/2005 14:11

He also covered her up with a blanket. Poor little lad!

TwoIfBySea · 20/10/2005 21:31

That woman neighbour who appeared on tv had reported it though, after a few days she told, I think it was the concierge or landlord about the post coming back out the door.

What is worse is that the grandmother didn't contact them for 2 weeks. I know, and I'm not a single mother either, that if I didn't phone my mum for 2 weeks she would phone herself but be seriously worried. It is wrong to expect social services to be involved when it is clear the poor mother was a good mum, it was because she kept a well stocked cupboard that her son lived.

Ulysees · 20/10/2005 22:02

I haven't clicked on the link and am in tears I just can't bear to read it,poor wee lamb.

peacedove · 21/10/2005 16:10

what should we do?

We should make a check on our nighbours.

In Islam, neighbors have many rights. If one eats, and any one in a circle of 40 houses goes hungry, that is what we will be asked about.

We are required to pray 5 times a day, together in mosques unless there are valid reasons for not being able to so in congregation. When one does that, and if a neighbor is absent for a couple of prayers, naturally one would enquire after the health.

Community awareness, that is what we should practice a,d teach our children, imho.

but TwoIfBySea I often don't speak to my mum for more than 2 weeks at a time. Is that really that strange?

TwoIfBySea · 21/10/2005 21:21

Well here is an update, I still feel so sorry for the poor little boy. This article tells more on the family situation.

I guess I am just surprised Compo, maybe it was the way I was brought up (duty, duty, duty) or that I am an only child so their only family link now. Two weeks just seems a long time and now it turns out it was longer. I suppose that if you had brothers and sisters then you wouldn't need to contact your parents so often - maybe it is just me. I know from conversations that most of my friends contact their mum at least once a week.

Just thinking of that poor little boy, I hope he is well loved and well cared for now. The family didn't have photos so took some for the press in the hospital, says a lot really.

milward · 21/10/2005 21:27

poor boy - so sad for him.

macwoozy · 21/10/2005 21:37

This is one of the most tragic stories I've read, the thought of a 3 year old wondering why his mummy hasn't woken up for so long. All I can say is thank god the little boy survived, wouldn't it be even more tragic if we had learnt that the boy had survived for so long but had eventually died. As time progresses, hopefully he'll begin to enjoy life once again. Absolutely awful.

suedonim · 21/10/2005 21:59

I just hope this little lad is young enough that he'll forget his ordeal eventually, hopefully when he's loved and cared for by a new family. I don't think we can pass any judgement on what his mother's family did or didn't do because no one can ever know the dynamics of other people's families.

expatinscotland · 21/10/2005 22:05

Gawd I feel for that poor woman. She hated living in that place. I can see why. It's legendary around here (Leith).

She'd had drug problems in the past, but was in treatment, and she did have other health problems like asthma.

Still no definitive indication why she died.

seb1 · 23/10/2005 11:39

OMG they think she may have been dead six weeks

update

saadia · 23/10/2005 12:33

Poor child, what he must have endured. I hope he comes through this horrendous ordeal and is looked after by people who truly love him.
