Say no to proposed tax on child maintenance

Some of you will already know that the Gvnt is currently consulting on its proposal to charge parents for the use of the Child Support Agency (CSA). This means that it will deduct up to 12% from the monthly child maintenance payment that you currently receive if you continue to use their service. This means an average of £24.00 will be deducted directly from you child(ren)s maintenance each and every month.

If my ex doesn't have the money taken directly form his wages - he will not pay towards his childrens upkeep. If I continue to receive money through the CSA my chidlren will have their money taxed at 12%, on top of the tax that their father already pays at 22% so a total of 36%

Do loan sharks charge at that price...?

Ive heard about this before, Im happy for them to do it if they get their act together and actually get some money from dd1s father. It might work as an incentive for them to actually do something. But I wont pay a fee if I continue to recive nothing.

ivykaty - all income is taxed regardless of whether it is then paid as maintenance - it's 12%.

But if you don't pay maintenence through the CSA then it isn't taxed at 12%, at the moment the money is taxed at 22% and now if you pay through them the money will be taxed again making it 36%

You really need to read the Gvnt paper.

Currently one parent will pay £200 to CSA and the other parent will get £200 for child.

The proposal is one parent will pay £240 to CSA and the other parent will get £176 for child.

Both parents are charged! the first (up to 40%, the second up to 12%)

For most people if you do not use the new sytem and accept the charge you will not get any money.

You should also know you will have to pay £100 to apply to use the new system, then they take the monthly charge, then, if you need to enforce a payment they will charge you again!

This is not just income tax!! This is not fair! It is too much money taken away from people who have little to begin with!

It is bonkers. Utterly bonkers. Had the CSA been a vicious beast who absent parents feared and coughed up immediately then I'd have a bit of sympathy with a "tax".

But given the CSA has since day 1 been about as useful as a chocolate teapot, I simply cannot see how they can justify this.

£100 to apply?! What for I might as well take that money and give it to the first person I see in the street.

and what about pwc on benefits will they not have to pay or will support from the absent parent become something that only people who work can afford? because I cant imagine that £100 is easy to find if you are on income support with young children

yes, quite. and like 100 is always easy to find when you are bringing up children on a single wage Hmm

so, over the thousands of childrens childhoods, that is a lot of cheap money for them and alot of hardship for others.

i know that if the csa were not collecting from my ex, my children wouldn't get a penny in maintenance. these new rules wouldn't change that if this were the start of that road for me. there is no way he would say, 'oh lets sort it out privately shall we dear'. if he had then i would not have gone to the csa in the first place and i guess this is the same for everyone.

the governemnt keep saying that it's better to pay the debt etc off now than make our children pay later. but in actuall fact, they are already taking from my children and all our children. not just the money in schools, the libraries, the services for our children etc etc, but now they even have the audacity to take money from me and my childrens father which has been earned and is for them.

gree, actually, according to the document, to set the whole thing up will cost the 'applicant' 'around £200' not £100. and anyone who is currently recieving manintenance through the csa will have their cases closed and will be made to re-apply and pay the fee.

I am not in a situation where I get maintence but bloody hell the government are crucifing everyone who needs money the most.

I will sign this petition. I am fed up of ordinary people getting screwed in every direction.

As if it isn't bad enough my ex-dh and his bidey-in will get tax breaks for being a (lying, cheating, f*king, w*king) couple I will now be punished for being the one who looks after the children.

Right enough the CSA have, over the past three and a half years, got the grand total of £40 from him. You see he apparently doesn't have to pay anything for the dts he walked out on.

I know this government want people to be in happy, clappy coupledom but they have to realise that it isn't always the fault of the single parent that this isn't always the case.

Surely it is only desperate types who use the CSA in the first place? I ended up using them when my ex stopped paying. They were completely fantastic and he now has to pay me 6 times what he had been paying. I also don't have to speak to him and hear his abuse - some of you will recall that last summer he referred to Ds (nearly 7 now) as the 'non-aborted foetus'. There is no way I would ever want a direct payment arrangment with him again.

Brilliant, the CSA have manged to collect a grand total of £35 from my ex over 6 years.
He signed off JSA when he discovered he was expected to take a grand total of £5 per week. If I've read this right they will also close my case and wipe the areas which at last count stood at £8500 about 18 months ago and I am no expected to pay for this wonderful service.

Oh well next time I have to choose between milk or loo roll will pop into Barclays and pinch some paying in slips to wipe my arse with.

It will save the governemtn a lot of money - the parents that know there ex's will not pay up will not bother the csa and pay £100 to be told such. This will help greatly to schew the figures and make things look like csa is not needed - wow everything will fit into place for the troy party..

I totally agree with everything said.

By "all in this together" I think they mean that "all us rich tories are in it together to screw over everyone else"!

I'm sure they know what they're doing is wrong, the problem is they don't care.

Well if they can squeeze some tax out of my £2.50 a week then they are welcome to it! I have been trying to get the CSA to cancel the payments altogether - I would rather get nothing than an insultingly small amount which I'm sure that my Ex actually enjoys paying just to insult me further!

Agree with Ivykaty. Fast forward another four years and you can bet your bottom dollar that when the next GE comes around, DC will be saying how successful the ConDems reform of the CSA is as it now has an almost 100% success rate - but he won't mention the thousands that either couldn't afford to reapply or didn't bother because they knew their ex wouldn't pay/knew the CSA are so shite they wouldn't be able to get any money from their ex.

Meanwhile, more and more single parent families are forced into poverty while feckless fathers get away without paying a jot for their offspring.

Brilliant. If this is what a private education does for you, they can keep it.
